Maybe somebody have tried this before but this is what I
did:

In the hope of creating a wider and unrestricted water flow
from an MJ1200 powerhead, I hacksawed the output nozzle
resulting in a ~1/2" by ~3/4" outlet (see pic). I plugged
the MJ to an Ocean Pulse Duo that I set to turn on and off
every 60 minutes or so. The result was something I did
not expect. The rotation of the MJ impeller changes
direction every time it switches back on causing the water
flow to be alternately directed towards the front and then
to the back of the tank. So what I have now is a switching
powerhead with a stronger and wider flow.

Cool, I did that too. I also drilled some 1/4" holes in a circular pattern on the bottom of the directional nozzle that you cut the tip off of. This should increase the intake flow to match the increased outlet size. In my 34g tank I have two MJ 900s and they give me plenty of flow.
