My largest chalice was fine yesterday. Early this afternoon, it was showing a 1/4" wide brown edge on one side. By 10PM, nearly half of the tissue has turned brown and stringy, and is just peeling off the skeleton. I did do my usual bi-weekly water change w/ Scripps last night. All everything else looks fine, including my 2 other chalices.

Parms:

temp range today: low 79.5 peak 81.5 (typical)
pH 8.2
NH3 0
Nitrates 0
PO4 0
Ca 430
Alk 9 dKH

Trying to figure out what's wrong, and what I can do to save what's still alive.

Barely a quarter of it is left :curse:

Don't know what's wrong, but maybe you should frag a small piece just in case you lose the colony.

Done... thanks.

sounds like it got a brown jelly infection. When you frag it, make sure to get past the edge of tissue and use an iodine dip before returning it to the tank. GL Russ, these infections are fast and furious.....very hard to save pieces once they start melting from it. And keep an eye out for any other LPS that may show signs, it can spread.

I fragged off all the necrotic areas, gently brushed away all brown goo, rinsed in tank water which I then discarded, and put the remainder in back in the tank. 2 hours later, it's still noticeably dying. :(

No sign of anything on other corals... so far.

man, sorry to hear it Russ. Do you have any iodine solution? You can still dip it, I would recommend a few dips over the course of the day. And if you continue to see slime, keep siphoning it. You can also try something like a Melafix or similar dip since it's a bacterial infection, but that's not proven. I've read some accounts of Vitamin C treatments, but have no experience of my own doing so. I sure hope you can salvage something.

Oh, Russ, I'm so sorry... I would probably cry if that happened to me :o

What's shocking to me is how fast it happened.

I've seen pieces go from normal to nothing overnight with brown jelly Russ. So I feel your pain, I'm so sorry :(

Man, that sucks! You are the second person to mention brown jelly disease today. Curious to know if this also happens to SPS or only LPS? And when you have it, does it always act this quickly like in your case?
