View Full Version : How do you quiet the water flowing into your sump?

Newbie here. I just figured out how to plumb my tank, now it is a little louder than I desired. I have 1.5" sand pipe draining into my sump. It sounds nice for a water fall, but not for my house. Does anyone have any tips on reducing the sound?

put a sponge under the pipe so the water flows into it instead of splashing all around. just make sure you clean the sponge periodically. some people use their filter socks to muffle the noise. you just need to play with it...

Just extend the pipe far below the water line in the sump.

A pic would help, but like on mine I put a durso, which is just an elbow attached(may need to adjust pipe height for this) and w/ an airline hole and tubing out top.
Elbow just slips on off, easy to adjust, can make a waterful nearly silent for some.
There are a few diff types, herbie is another.

I like the first one but if you have an overflow box do the herbie

Those are cool ways also, BEANANIMAL is a great source.
Here's a couple pics to give idea of durso, and it's real basic, simple, maybe this will work for you.
Basically it's just the elbow that slips on top.

And then airline tubing allowing it to breathe

heres something you can do. i have this style set up this thing is dead silent .hope the pics help. just a 1 1/2inch pipe with a 3/4 inch pipe in the center of it you will have to modify the 1 1/2 to 3/4 converter at the bottom of the t to alow you to put 3/4 pipe thru the top and bottom acting as a coupler. this is simple to do with dremel tool. then just use valve to control flow rate . pipe in the center also act as a back up overflow (drill a small hole about 1/2 inch from the top of the pipe in the center. super quiet set up . i would recomend a gate valve for the 11/2 main drain easier to dial in but ball walves work fine to just a pain to get it adjusted.

I will try the 3/4 pipe down the center, but i cant cap off the top like in above pic. Will that affect the water level?

Check out the pics Daniel posted in this thread:

His standpipe is very similar to yours.

Two important things to have a happy Herbie standpipe:

1. Use a gate valve for adjustment on the primary drain. They are expensive, but it is the only way to make it work right.

2. Make sure that the end of the primary drain pipe is all the way under water in the sump. Otherwise it won't work right.

3. (I had to add a 3rd item) Make sure that the end of your secondary drain pipe is NOT under water. This will cause the system to make a lot of noise if the water is draining from your backup pipe, and this will help to warn you that something is wrong.

I have been working on this for hours and I can not seem to get it just right. I think I am going to take a break till tomorrow before I go crazy:crazy:. I did not glue anything up for my dry runs and that may be one problem, another is I did not find a gate valve at HD.

I am finding that a 1" pipe in a 1.5" pipe is restricting the flow too much, causing the water to drain into the 1" pipe making tons of noise. Also, 3/4" pipe is a little too small causing a horrible noise as well.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH.

It's gonna be tough to get it right without a gate valve. They sell them at Aquatic Warehouse.

How does the gate valve work. Does it restrict the water flow into the main pipe? Because I think there already is too much restriction.

try putting a mesh net over the top, thats what i did on my 60 and it worked well to quiet the sucking sound and it was a similar setup.

I tried the net and it did quiet it greatly; however, the perfectionist doesn't want to settle for close enough. Come tomorrow and I may be saying something different.

I would think that you'd want to use a 1.5" main pipe with a 3/4" emergency pipe inside. The emergency pipe should stick up out of the main pipe by a couple of inches. Then you use the gate valve to restrict the flow so that it is just below the top of the 3/4" pipe. HTH.

After taking a break it all seems so much clearer. The gate valve is the most important piece and of course the one I did not have at the time.

Also, just wanted to add, as Dave pointed out previously, you'll just want to make sure that your main drain pipe (the one above the filter sock) is all the way under the waterline.

For sure

It look like you run Gen-X 6000 1300gph pump for the return, maybe that is the reason why you can not get it quiet in the first time,1300gph with only one drain will rush the water down too fast and creat water fall noise, you either have to go with dual drain or change to smaller return pump in order to control the noise level better.

Its all controlled now. Just need to start finding some LR. These forums have some good leads.
