This is my second attempt at an HOB overflow box. My first box worked fine, but was a bit to noisy for my taste so this time I tried to implement a durso style design into the box. The other problem that I had with the first box is that it got clogged up with algae from time to time, being so close to the light. I thought about making the top piece out of black acrylic to remedy this problem, but was concerned about not being able to see in there if I needed to check on things. My final decision was to make a removable black cover that I could take on and of at my leisure.

The purpose of this build was not cosmetic as the box is not visible from behind the tank. My main concern was that it works and that it is quiet.

Here is a pic from the back. One hole was drilled on each side of the box. The hole on the right side is the main Durso style drain. The one on the left is and emergancy drain in case of failure.

Here are two side shots of the box, one with the cover off and one with the cover on:

I installed the box 3 days ago and so far so good, I'm very happy with it :).

Feel free to post comments, negative or positive.

KUDOS! That is very cool and looks like a darn good job. Does it work like the CPR overflow box? In other words, how does it not break siphon going over the 'hump'? Thanks for sharing :D

Yep, exactly like that. If you can see it in the pic, there is 1/4" tubing coming off the top, I connect that to a little pump that keeps the siphon going.

Very nice! we should get together sometime so I can show you some tips on acrylic work. I have built a fuge before and am glad to say it is still working beautifully. My Calcium reactors should be on the market soon as well. I definately like when someone puts their efforts to positive use! Keep up the good work! How about doing a DIY seminar for one of the clubs to help others help themselves?
