What about the thermonic controller, otherwise it stay on all the time?

yes you would need a controller...I had an RKE so, no need for it for me....

Interesting, how does this work? Does it ctually have coolant gas in it or is it a "heat sink" type thing with a fan on top? Just wondering...

Hope I spell this right...it uses a peltier electronic cooling system. Google it!

Looks like a peltier cooler. Basically it moves heat from one side to the other, so it takes heat from the water side and moves it to the top where the heatsink and fan get rid of it.

Hm...Wonder if I can build one out of a small heatsink and computer fan...This method should have less evaporation than using a fan so might give it a try..

I was just thinking the same thing. Peltier coolers are very cheap and work pretty well. I could see this working pretty well on a nano.

One interesting option would be to stick the thing right on the back of the tank or fuge. Assuming the temperature change doesn't shatter the glass  it could be a very quick and cheap way to cool a small tank. Less risky on an acrylic tank I should think.

Looks like triggler is well on his way of making one of these :D :D

I was all over this idea before I found I don't need to chill here at the beach.
I got a 12v six pack cooler cheap off craigslist but never tore into it.
Be sure to check the power rating... and the bigger the heatsink/fan the better it works.

haha Believe me I would! Except he's sold this already a long time ago! And these things beand new are $150 + and you need a controller too! lol

Plus I've got a canopy right now with 2x65W PC's and wow does it get HOT! Almost 85 degrees before I threw some iced bottles in there! I have to run fans anyways, I just didn't get a chance to get any so far. And on top of this I've ordered a 150MH that will surely boil the water unless I get a cooling mechanism together soon enough!!

well I'm glad this for sale post has brought so much excitement, but talking about it isn't going to bring it back, still sold it a year ago :)

Wow, didn't notice that this thing was last year. On the DIY prospects, keep in mind that a bare peltier cooler costs well under $20. Still need a controller, but the cooler itself could be done for almost nothing.

So far I've got the Peltier cooler all together and free, from spare parts I have. Now I need to figure out how to put it in contact with the water to transfer heat through it...

I don't think that persons DIY chiller will be that effective... I want to have the IceProbe directly inside my tank for maximum heat transfer. I just don't know what to house it in because I don't think acrylic is a good conductor of heat.

He has the peltier attached directly to the filter, so there is may a couple of milimeters separating it from the water in the tank. I'll bet for a small tank it's possible this could work OK without needing to get too fancy. If you already have the peltier it's easy enough to test before moving on to something more complicated.

Here's a photo of the Ice Probe I incorporated into a 20 gal tank. It's installed in the bottom of a Skilter 250. This tank was kept near the beach in the CBQ at NAB. No AC in the room but the temp locally didn't get too high. The 20 Used 4 VHO Bulbs, and eventually added a 250 Halide. Worked very well, again, local temps never got too high. I'm doing the same on a 5 gal nano with LED lighting but kept in the garage for now.

The IceProbe is the ideal cooling solution for small aquariums (up to 10G or less). This quiet, reliable, and efficient chiller uses advanced thermoelectric technology to directly covert electricity into cooling power. Includes Ice Probe controlle

Found this on just about every search I did for this thing.
