Hello,

I've had a hippo tang for the past year or so and he is/was doing great. He is starting to lose color around his eyes and moving back. I am afraid it might be HLL, so I've been more diligent about putting some algae clips in there, with some Zoecon soaked in. Anyone ever grow any caulpera or other macro algae in their tank for more constant snacking? Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Ted

I don't add any macro to my display but I do feed emerald entree often for my tangs. Majority of fish will eat it since it has all sorts of goodies in it.

Since caluepra is considered illegal it is hard to come by plus not as great of stuff imo as halimeda and many other algaes most people will set their food source for tangs in refugiums to help replenish copepod population as well which can help aid in another vital source of food for certain fish.

Not all Caulerpa is illegal
Halmedia SUCKS UP Calcium and most anything won't eat it

The fish is in too small of a tank

Thanks for the replies. I agree that he is reaching the size where he needs a bigger tank. Do any LFS sell halimeda as a short term solution?

halimeda is really not a good solution. its not very digestible and indeed most stuff wont eat it. not even rabbit fish.... and I think that says something. PK does have other macro algae. Try others like red algaes, other greens. Even cheato....though its not too digestible either. or at the very least some veggie greens. not the best but it might help for now. I just feed nori for my tangs and so far no hlle or any other problems at that. My overflows are practiccally macro algae farms> not recommended since it can clog the overflow. So when I clean it out I just feed the algae to the tangs.

I've been thinking about ordering an algae starer package from this company

http://www.ipsf.com/index.html

They have a gracilaria specie that grows in the HI that can be propagated in the refugium. There is an easier to obtain specie through pacific aquafarms called gracilaria pacifica, which is a cold water specie, which doesn't thrive in a tropical reef setting.

I order from IPSF all the time. Gerald is great and sends quite a lot of it out. Fish dig it.
