You've absolutely got that right. I've done lots of plumbing in my time and I've been living in fear of this project. I've made at least 3 trips to HD acquiring parts and I haven't even started yet.

Plumbing starts tomorrow and you are more than welcome to come and play!

I have five HD buckets full of misc PVC fittings. All sizes ranging from 1/2" to 2". If you want, I can bring them by sometime today and you can pillage through them as the project goes on and just give me back what's left when you're all done. I do not see any PVC projects in my near or distant future, so I really don't need the stuff. You never know, it might save you a few HD trips and a few $$. Just let me know and I'll pop over.

Funny you should say that. The lumenarc 3's are not going to cut it with this setup. 30" front to back is too much acreage to cover. Going with 3 Elites.

Yeah, it does look flat. the only rock touching the back of the tank is a section around the overflow. Everything else is caves, arches and overhangs.

Lighting question - I noticed you are running 4 lumenmax elites! I have a 180 gallon and was considering getting 3 of these reflectors, but I can only have the bottom of them around 8 inches off of the water line. My question being, do you think there will be enough spread to avoid the spotlike affect or do i need to figure a way to raise them higher? Also was wondering how you liked them so far? Seems you have great color and growth, but I was wondering if you had any other thoughs on how you liked them. BTW your tank is awesome!

It depends on how wide your tank is, what kind of bracing you have and what your tank is made of. These fixtures are so wide that I think you would have to work at it to get the spotlight effect. The only time my setup looked like that was when I was only running 3 fixtures but my tank is 7' long. My main concern would be getting enough circulation across the tank so you don't cook it.

I have photographic proof that the tank is still chugging along. Sorry, I'm too lazy to pull out the DSLR.

As you tell, life has definitely gotten in the way of my social life. Between our new store, 3 growing boys and mid life issues (LOL), there just hasn't been time to play with my tank. Sps has taken over the box at this time. It looks more like a weed garden than a coral tank. The tank over the last year has seen lots of ups and downs. A couple of acts of god and 1 user error.

The error was a bad one. Leave the house for 1 week without having anyone check the system.

( 7 year old son) "Daddy, don't you think we ought to have someone take care of the tank?"
(daddy) "Nah, everything is automated and we haven't had any problems in forever."
(7 year old son) ((incredulously))"Daddy, are you crazy?"
(daddy) "Nah, have faith."

1 week passes

(7 year old son) "I told you so."

As best I can tell, 3 days before we got home, one of my Digital Aquatics Expansion Sockets shorted out killing my main pump and only the main pump. Not so bad on it's own because I've got the MP60 with 2 backup ups. Unfortunately, the bubble king was still running in the sump. As the water rises in the sump the BK starts to overfill. The bad part of this is the BK sits close to the edge of the sump. If the cap blows off, water will slowly spray out of the sump.

Sooooooooo, by the time we got home, the tank had lost about 10" of water, the tunze's that were still in the water were making a huge mess. All this time, the lighting cycle kept on keeping on. (4x 250w de and 2x6' VHO) oh yeah, and so was the chiller since that would make everything that much more fun.

Anyway, The top 10" of sps had spent a goodly chunk of time out of the water which didn't do them any favors. I actually only had 2 total losses and about a dozen had to be hacked back in order to save them. The temperature issue did kill a few of my favorite lps.

Very very bad stewardship on my part.

Please don't be a ******* like me and have someone check on your tank in your absence.

Peace out,

David

ps, I didn't loose a single fish. Yea Vortech!

Hey David, Did you go with the 50 watt or 100 watt Ecoxotics, and how many of each color did you get?
Also, have you been able to determine the PAR for the units? I haven't seen any specifications for them.
Thanks, Steve.

I went with the 100w. 3x blue and 3x white.

I havent even tried to get a par reading on them. I've got the blues running 100% and the whites ~70%.

I think the Ecoxotics have the most intense shimmer effect I've seen....better even than halides. Do you agree?
Are your acros doing well under these lights? I've been considering them for some time.

Come on Steve...no way Jose....you must be drinking the LED juice to think that. :) If it wasn't a power issue David would have his halides back in a heartbeat.

Hmm, I wasn't throwing that out there based on nothing! Seriously, I've been running my halides since 2007, but the Cannon Ecoxotic 100 watt units that I've seen have the most stunning shimmer effect I've seen. I'm not talking about the Ecotech Radions that many hobbiests are gravitating to. They have nice color but nominal shimmer effect. I think the difference is that the Cannon's are putting out 100 watts from a single source, not 34. I have been considering a change for some time and like the effect of the Cannon's, but I've never seen any thread or stat sheet on their performance with SPS (or any other corals for that matter). If David is successful with his, that might help to persuade me to make the move as well.

Being lazy. Cut and paste from the posting.........

$2400 (I forgot to include this)

I've broken down my setup and need someone else to make use of it. This is for the hardware only. All the critters have found new homes. I've made notes in the photos to explain what is included. The price for this package deal is pretty darn cheap but seems fair to me since you and your friends will be doing all the physical labor to transport everything. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone with a passion for the hobby/lifestyle. in the spirit of full disclosure, this tank is very heavy. (you have to do the math yourself but all the numbers should be there in the descriptions).also, the cabinetry will not survive the disassembly so all you'll get is the base frame and not the "skin". Please let me know if you have any questions. andas I unearth stuff I'll post it to the deal and won't change the price. bonuses!David 619-851-8164
