So i was driving down my street, noticed a garage sale so i slowed down to see what they had to share, saw a Fluval 304, so i got out and asked the price, and she said $3.00 for everything, complete fluval filter and a box of misc. fish items. Pump works great

Annyways, i was thinking, i have an 8 gallon biocube, i was wondering if anyone ever heard of or has made a fluval into a "sump". I guess putting live rock inside the main chamber and possibly carbon into one of the slots. Any ideas..? Thank you.

Fluval is canister filter, closed type, not sump style.Sump is open air filter. With 8 gallon bio cube, you will be fine with that 304 but remember that you have to clean the sponge regularly, otherwise it will build up nitrate after awhile.

Thank you for the advice, would it be ok then to put some live rock in there..?

It is Ok to put some live rock in there but they eventually will turn white due to lack of light

Yes you could use live rock there just fine. Any algae growing on the outside of the rock will die off due to lack of light as hung mentioned, however the loss of algae won't have any effect on the rocks biological filtering capabilities - it will work just fine.

I did a "cryptic" fuge with a canister on my SPS tank
Worked great
only thing is, you have to remember to clean out canister every couple weeks, it will catch alot of detritus

so no problem with live rock and pressure inside the cannister? that is interesting.

way to think outside the box...a cool idea. reminds me of whomever thought of using those big aquaclear HOBs as fuges.
