See the photo below - last night this was a full colony - I left my house this morning before lights and did not look in, came home tonight and found this. Can anyone tell me what might of mowed these zoas down. I dont see anything on them and the zoas around it are fine (for now) It is clear down to the rock, like it has been fragged. Please dont tell me this is what zoa eating nudi's leave behind??? Again this happened in less that 24 hours.

Shelly,

fiji could be on the right track. When I first check out the picture I dont see any sure sign evidence that can point directly to the cultprit. But based on fiji's suggestion I agree it could be a predator, something that possibly stung it, dropped on it. If it is nudi's they are very active when the lights are out and or prior to turning on the lights. It seems like the affected area is at a random spot. Normally when I do experience a fungus, pox issues its due to lighting, params or newly introduced corals/fishes. Right now its still to early to tell what it is unless any of the changes have occurred recently. Do you have any more background information that can be relevent to the issue?

This could be a false alarm on my part. In the center is a crevis in the rock, I am beginning to think that David had the right answer and that something may of fell on it. I am thinking that when those polyps (that are closed up) - open, they may cover the crevis and possibly there was not zoas there in the first place. I wont know until they open again. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have starfish that mow down zoas. Looks exactly like your pic except you can see the starfish on each polyp
