Excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain how a fluidized bed filter is beneficial to our reef aquariums? Are there any reasons that it could be bad for them as well?

It's not. You may find this hard to believe but SOME of use aquariums for other than reef systems :D

One could run carbon or phosphoban in one of these, no?

I guess you can run carbon in it, might be more a pain in the ass to get it out though. I got a used empty one for sale as well if you or anyone would like to try it, lmk
