I bought this tank on 10/10/04 from someone. It had hair algae and I'm still battling. I'm new to reefing so I'm stoked to have a complete setup in such a short time.

I need some help with the algae problem - I'm open to suggestions!

90 gal with corner overflow
30 gal sump
Aquaspacelight: 2 x 250w 10k hqi + 150w 20k hqi
Euroreef skimmer (ES 5-1?) skimming good

do you have a clean up crew? I would recommend a variety of snails and hermits to take care of the job. A refugium with some macro algae will also help reduce unwanted algae in the tank.

where are you in the 92130? Im in the same area.

Here's my current cleanup crew:
50 asst snails; some hermit crabs (~10); a small urchin; yellow tang and hippo tang.

I've been trying to get the coraline going to compete with the hair algae. I've been dosing 50ml of b-ionic daily to keep the calcium levels high. I also started dosing coral-vital a couple days ago.

I'm cutting back on the lighting too - going down to 9 hours total. I'm not sure how much to keep the lights on. I've had them on for about 12 hours - mostly just the 20k. I had the 10k's on for 3 hours in the middle of the day. I have 650 watts total: 500w of 10k hqi (2 x 250w) and 150w 20k.

I live in Torrey Hills. It's south of I-56 off El Camino Real (road changes name to Carmel Mountain Ranch).

Here's another pict with my new Tridacna Crocea.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...but don't urchins EAT coraline?

Seem to remember reading that somewhere....

How often do you do water changes? When i had any algae problems i did more water changes like 5% each week instead of a big monthly 20% change. I also hooked up an auto top off setup using RO water. That worked for me but in this hobby you'll do a lot of trial and error. Also have you looked into getting a calcium reactor? This will help keep your pH and calcium levels steady. However, read up on it first!

If you don't mind me asking what did that whole setup cost you?
