I just a bought a 100 watt heater for my sons tank. When I put it in, the water was 70 deg. by that evening it was 85 deg. The heater has never cycled off I re-calibrate it but to no avail.

What temperature sensor/monitoring device are you using? Unfortunately, the thermometer on heaters can be inacurate at times. Ebo Jagers have been quite good for me but sometimes you have to find the variance between the heater's thermometer and your tank thermometer. When installing a new heater, I usually do this, set the dial on the heater to 10 degrees lower than your desired temperature. After a few hours, turn it up a degree or two. Repeat this process until the reading on your tank's thermometer reaches the desired temperature. Hope that helps.

I do not use a temperature sensor/monitoring devise. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

One thing I gotta ask is: Did you let the heater sit in the tank for atleast 15 mins before you turned it on. That lets the internal thermostat adjust to the current temp and will be more accurate.

Yes, for now I am only using the heater to heat the refill water. It has never cycled off

What's the water temperature and what's the setting on the heater?

I had the same problem with two of those that i bought. It never, turned off. Worked fine when I first got it, but maybe a month later, it stopped turning off.

If either of us could design a TRULY GOOD/DEPENDABLE heater we'd be rich.
Why has no one already done this?
