I had a file magically disappear from my laptop. I have checke deverywhere on the internet and it all says I need the original CD. I bought a setup system at Circuit City so the CD is not the actual Windows CD. Does anyone have the CD i can borrow for a weekend so I can try and get this fixed. If anyone has any experience and wants to help out I wouldnt stop you.

Oh yeah - click your start menu > control panel > system

It should list your OS and tell you which stupid version it is.

My computer wont boot that is why I need the XP disc.

IT is missing some file and all the fixes on the internet say to boot from the CD.

I would try Xp home, then pro, then media.

I dunno, circuit city packs all sorts of bs on the machines.

HP also... only compatible with HP Hard drives, what BS. I say, save what you need and reformat the damn thing. If you dont know how to access your HD through Linux, you can take it out of your tower and plug it in an external enclosure and drag all the files you need out to a different computer. Then reformat to a fresh copy of windows

Unix I sent you a pm but your box is full. Call me 619-742-3278

Thanks so much for helping. I transfered alot of files by disc and I think I had everything except my music. I am not terribly concerned about my music. I still have it all on Cd. I was worried there may be files on there that I may need in the future but as it is right now they are gone anyways. If you could help me reformat it that would be awesome!!!!!

actually, they are not gone. they are still there, its just in the state that it is they are unreadable.

if they are that important, you can always slave (secondary) that drive to another machine and copy them, then you can format and reinstall.

ok.. so the problem is commonly a bad Ram/memory or a bad hard Drive. Usually when the system errors and shows that the ntfs.sys is missing, you try to recover it using the OS CD. Then after doing so, will give you a setupdd.sys is corrupt. This problem has gone on for ages and most of the time it is a faulty device in the computer. The ram or the hard drive. I will see if you have two sticks of ram in the computer and I will remove 1 to test it. I will let you know

Just went through the same thing...ended up being a bad HD. I will invest in an external USB hard drive from Frye's shortly to back up my PICs and files for next time.

Someone admonished me for changing the oil in my truck but not changing out my hard drives...LOL
