What kind of vibe are you looking for? Modern, classy, formal, urban? There are a lot of nice restaurants in downtown but it really depends on your taste.

went to the Prado not too long ago for work..pretty nice place, FOOD IS EXCELLENT. Actually not overpriced either.

And personally I hate downtown (traffic, parking, bums)

Prado is a good choice though, but I think somewhere like downtown la jolla would have a better warm-mushy romantic feel if that is your #1 goal. (bigger hit on the wallet however)

Dude, the bums are the best part of downtown. You are bound to get a show from one or more of them during the visit down there.:D

I vote for Bertrand's at Mr. A's. But be ready for the pricetag, especially if you have drinks. It was well worth it for our anniversary :)

Mr. A's is expensive, and frankly the view was the best part (not the food), IMO. The Marine Room is cheaper, has MUCH better food. Laurel has good food, huge wine selection, but is pricy.

Blue point is good if you want seafood. Any of the Cohen Restaurants are really very good. Island Prime has an excellent view of the downtown skyline. None of these places, though, strike me a super private/quite/romantic.

Dussini's is affordable, great food, pretty mood lit :)

I took my wife for our 5th to Bucca di Beppo and had reservations at the kitchen table. Italian resturaunt, good food, maybe pricey but not for the portions. Somewhat romantic, the kitchen table is a big table, you meet the chef, managers, kitchen staff. You'll feel like the Godfather!!! What woman can resist that power? They make you and your wife the center of attention, they cart the other customer in front of you, garunteed you'll have a blast and a little...(wink wink nod nod).... well you know.

Congrats

at the risk of sounding like a fool what has worked for me is not the place but the effort and thought going into it. Unless she is into reefing as much as us i would leave off telling her we suggested where you go. im always on a budget so i put alot of thought and effort in to what we do. as long as you make it about the 2 of you and not try to break any records im sure it will all work out.

Cool Place= 1500 Ocean. Great food..... make reservations and get a GOOD table right about sunset! (It is not new Peter, been there a bit, on the back of the Hotel.) Don't forget the long walk on the beach.

1500 Ocean is what used to be the Prince of Whales Room.

I suggest Jack & Guilios in Old Town. They used to be located in PB a long time ago and moved to Old Town 5 or 10 years ago. I took my wife there for dinner on our first date, then we went to see The Princess Bride in the theatre. Yes that was about 20 years ago. We have gone there for our anniversary every year for the last 18 years of our marriage. It is a very nice, modest, Italian restaraunt with great food.

One of my favorite restaurants with a nice evening view of the harbor is Top of the Market - Fish Market on 750 N. Harbor Dr.

It's romantic, especially on a nice evening that's not too cold (if you're sitting outside). It's a great place for seafood lovers!

C Level on Harbor Drive, sister rest to Island Prime. They share the same kitchen. If you time it right, you can get a table overlooking SD Bay Downtown Skyline. Also go to Priceline.com and get a room at the nearby Airport Hyatt and make it a night.

Have flowers waiting in the room along with chocolates and a bottle of your favorite nightcap.

Sit on the balcony overlooking the bay or city and enjoy your evening.
