Is anyone going to the Red Bull Air Race?

I'm with the Coast Guard and I was there yesterday for the practice flights and it's an awesome race. These planes fly super fast, at low altitude, and the take super sharp turns. It's the first time they hold this event in San Diego. Anyways, you had doubts about going, I think it's well worth it. Hopefully this storm doesn't hit us.

My fiance and I wanted to take our boat out on the water and watch... What are the regulations out there? Obviously some of the bay will be blocked off but how close could we get in the water?

I got this from California boating guide-news & classifieds:

However, boaters should be aware that the waterway passage stretching from USS Midway aircraft carrier to Coronado Island will be closed to boat traffic during practice sessions and portions of the two-day competition, which pits World War II-style acrobatic aircraft maneuvering over and around a series of 60-ft.-high pylons placed on the bay.
Race officials will close the in-water area to boat traffic of all kinds at the following times: noon-4 p.m. Sept. 19; 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m. Sept. 20; 8-10 a.m., 11 a.m-12:45 p.m. and 1:30-5:30 p.m. Sept. 21; and 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sept. 22 (or Sept. 23, depending on weather). Other authorized vessels and personnel will be permitted entry.

You can see them from Coronado side of the bay. You can also rent kayaks from seaforth boat rentals for 4 hours for $45

Its going to be pretty packed in the water. I hearalot of people are watching it from inside the convention center. Glorietta bay or shelter island.. If you where to launch I would at shelter island.

This is the information that we have been giving out to the boating community. We are also doing a broadcast that gives this info also. Hope you enjoy the show and be safe. There are going to be a lot of Coast Guard boats in the area, so make sure you have the proper PFD's, documentation, everything.

The safety zone spans the entire waterway from a line between G St Pier and the Naval Base Coronado Carrier Basin to a line between Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal and the area just north of Coronado’s Tidelands Park. The safety zone will impede vessel traffic into or out of the South Bay. The Safety zone will include all waters within the area marked by the following coordinates: 32°42'41.00"N, 117°10'33.06"W, 32°42'26.40"N, 117°10'55.69"W, 32°41'45.04"N, 117° 9'54.28"W, 32°41'57.22"N, 117° 9'33.05"W.

This safety zone will be enforced as follows:

21 September from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
22 September from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The safety zone and any required revisions will broadcast on event dates over VHF Channel 16.

i was there from 11am, i dont reccomend you go until around 1. the actual racing doesnt start until at least 2, yesterday there was a nice delay in the start. it was pretty kickass, they even had an f18 fly by at "almost mach 1".

I was there all day yesterday. It was pretty cool. Right you don't have to pay if you want to just watch, but the section that I was in had FREE drinks and FREE food. Well they're not really free because of the ticket price but the company I work for bought the tickets, so.... It was FREE for me. There was a pretty cool air show before the race so if you like to see different types of airplanes I would get there a little earlier.
