my neighbor owns the dive shop in oside, he was out on his boat fishing FOR those things. he gave me one cleaned, it was pretty good, just a ton of meat. no ammonia smell or taste though

Right on, he must have caught/targeted the smaller ones. It is the HUGE ones that have the ammonia taste to them. Marinading in milk or buttermilk is the best way to minimise the the ammonia.

How close to the shore do they come? In other words, do I have to worry about them during a surf session?

They do come in on real high tides, but are also primarily night feeders that follow the bait fish. Typically, you will not see one in the day.

Dont know how close they could come to the shore but surprisingly they come out during day time one of our box supplyer just came back from a fishing trip and seen it personally grabbing the tuna while being reeled in to the boat and snatching the fish crazy

Okay.. Went diving last night north of Scripps and luckily no squids. :) We were only down about 60 feet and stayed away from any schooling fish (in case of a feeding frenzy). :)

Bets way to find out where they are is to call the offices for the party boats. They can tell you how far out they are going to get them.
