He is freaking awesome!!

How is your tank set up for him, can we got some detailed shots of the 50g?

I have been debating on whether I should get a blue ring or not.

You ever feed him live food?

Did I say he is freaking cool?!

Hehe, yes. Here it is:

Go here for a wealth of knowledge about cephs: http://www.tonmo.com

I love that site :]

But to answer your questions: Yes! They actually prefer live food. Fiddler crabs are their favorite. Then live shrimp, hermit crabs, etc.

Definately do NOT get a blue ring! Those are deadly to humans haha. I'd go wtih a bimac or a briareus for your first.

a chiller is a must isnt it?

I have an empty 60g, might just.....

hehe

ps. Does he ever try to climb out or escape? I hear they squeeze out of small openings in the tops and they fall out and die :(

Stop stalking me! Just kidding :]

It depends what species of octopus you are getting. The Briareus that I got is a tropical octopus which is perfect for me since 80 degrees fahrenheit is just a little above my room temperature.

For the most common-kept octopus, the bimac, it shouldn't be higher than mid 70s. Sometimes a fan over the water is adequate cooling but in most cases you need a chiller - which are too much $$ :P

Check out the Ceph Care Articles on tomno.com. They contain all of the basic info.

Mine hasn't yet, but I think that is because he's just getting used to the tank. It also depends alot on the personality. Alot of the tonmo members have said that some of their octos that they've kept never attempted to escape, but others did. I think alot of it has to do with me keeping my water perimeters very tight, so he's happy! :] But as a precaution I keep plexi-glass covers on each side and may add some velcro lining along the top because they don't like the feeling of it on their tentacles.

I bought a 100g tank about a year ago with the intention of setting up an octopus tank...then the supplier for octopi dried up.

Where did you get your bimac (if it is indeed a bimac), and do you know how old it is?

Mine is called a Briareus - distinguished by its longer-than-usual legs. :]

The seller told me that it was born 3-4 weeks ago, so I'm guessing it is roughly 2 months old. Still has at least 10 or more to go! I can already tell I'm going to get so attatched to it.

Ebay =P

Spent double what I thought I was going to spend, but whatever, it was well worth it.

that's cool.is the top of your tank covered?

KingPum

Yeah, I bought two sheets of Plexiglass at Home Depot for about $8 each and then cut them according to the equipment in the tank. It would be much easier if I had a sump but I don't have the money for that.

Lately I've been keeping one side open. I don't think he'll go exploring the top of the aquarium anytime soon though.. He's very shy.

Octavius is cool! Octopus are really neat creatures, too bad they're so shy. I'd be a little concerned with leaving one top off... it only takes one time he gets brave enough to venture out and he's a goner...

I was talking to a customer two days ago, he's got a 300gallon+ tank with several sharks and a 11" octopus. He buys 50-100 damsels every month as food!

$81 after shipping. Shipping was $25 - not too bad.

That's true, I'm going to secure it today.

how big will he get

KingPum

The maximum size for briareus is about a 5-inch mantle, 30 inch arms.

Sometimes they can get bigger or smaller than that though.

I kept octopus before too. They don't live very long. My lived about 6 months or so. it was pretty big when I got it. I think they only live about 1 to 1 1/2 years max. They are very interesting animal to have. I got my to open up a container and remove the food I placed inside.
