i just opened a new bottle of dts, but it smells like anaerobic bacteria or sewage. does that mean its dead?

That is my understanding that if it smells bad the algae is dead.

Odor:
The various species contained in DT's phytoplankton blend produce some odor, some more then others. The Chlorella has the strongest odor and is also the largest species, providing nutrition to animals that will not feed on phytoplankton cells as small as Nannochloropsis.
