Well my wife, who has been very supportive of my hobby, really didn't want my living room tank to get bigger than it already is (72"Lx18"Wx26"T). After much discussion, grovelling, begging, etc., she shrugged her shoulders and said, "OK...I guess". I want to get a bigger tank. I am thinking 96"L x 32"W x 30"T. That's 399 gallons according to Reefcentral math. I will be embarking on the design/planning phase shortly. I'll keep you posted. Wish me luck!:D

you should get a 72x30x26, that would be an awesome dimension.

Congrats Dave. You have the equip room set up, should be fairly easy switch, except the actual move from one tank to the next. I think I will get lucky and be able to set my new tank right next to the old. I want to go bigger already and I haven't even set this one up yet! Let me know if you could use an extra hand with anything. Good luck.

"When do you plan on embarking on this journey??"

Planning will begin soon. Actual procurement will be a few months, at least. This has to be very, very, well thought out. I don't want to do it twice.

"I have a pretty open summer this year...I can come down and help....this way I can see both yer old one...and the new one :D"

Hopefully it won't take all summer. I am trying to come up with an idea on how to empty the 135 of inhabitants, rock, sand, and water and keep it all alive while the new one is put into place, plumbed, and filled. I think I will need at least 3 or 4 days to re-plumb everything. I will also need to have someone already lined up to take the 135. Putting in a new 8' tank is one thing. Putting it in and leaving the old 6' tank on the floor of the living room is another.

I'll be able to help you out on the 3 or 4 days relocation if you need it, Dave. I've got room to set up a temporary tank over here in my garage if you need it.

I may actually hang on to one of my 75g tanks or the used 135g tank I bought a couple weeks ago, and I use Scripp's water so not a problem for that part of your project.

Remember that karma thing you discussed on that other thread with me? :D

LOL. I dunno Jojo...I just got lucky on that one. I've missed tons of sweet deals for various reasons. But with this sweet deal comes a dilemma: What I REALLY wanted and had been planning for the past several months was that 860 gallon tank I mentioned to you in PMs a few days ago. It would be 10' x 4' x 32", and set up on the back patio as a show stopper.

I think it was the $thousands difference in setup price that convinced me to go with the 360g right now rather than wait several more months for the 860g. Plus, the tangs needed the new home pronto. But now I'm gonna have a hard time justifying that kind of upgrade in a year or so! Nahhhh.... LOL

Congrats again, Dave. Keep us posted on this big dog tank.

PS: Why don't you just buy Danny's 500g tank?

I can not make 36" front to back work. It will stick out just a little too far.

I have been doing some brain storming...Does anybody know how the principles of evaporative cooling towers work? I was thinking of coming up with a plan to use something like this to cool a tank. I am also planning a remote, DSB. Of course I will have 3 to 4 inches of sand in the display tank as well. What can I say...I'm a sandbed guy.

I know what evaporative cooling is, but an evaporative cooling tower? Whats that and how does it work? Any pics of one?

Danny's PM box is always full. Anybody know how much he's asking for his 500g? I suppose I could stalk him at his job . . .

Cooling towers are used by most industries to cool process water, a lot of large air conditioning systems use them as well. They are basically large structures (towers) that pump water to the top, and it trickles downward over plates and is collected in a large sump. There is obviously more to it than this but this is the tower concept. http://www.cti.org/whatis/coolingtowerdetail.shtml

Hehe, well you could always overkill and use the old tank as your monster sump/frag tank/fuge :P That is what I plan on doing with my 75 once I build my house and put my dream tank up.

DaveMorris

Sort of like my current setup...135g display tank with a 20g sump (holding 10gals) and a 60gal refugium. On the new setup I am planning on at least two RK bins. I will be a deep sand bed and the other will be for a fuge.
