I saw a website linked to from nano-reef.com that was a metal framework that held a HD special MH light.

Got to thinking about that. It doesn't sound too hard... Then I got to thinking about the other version of those lights: the contractors worklight with stand. $40 at the HD I went to today.

So these contractor's worklights are mounted to a crossbar.

Why not build a framework to hold the bar that the HD fixtures already fit?

I'm thinking conduit painted black.

I don't have a jpg of it drawn out yet. Once I do, I'll see what I can do about posting it.

You can probably hide the cords inside the conduit. Probably hide the ballast somewhere more or less out of sight.

I built an 'L' shaped hanger to hang my pendant from. I used the black 1/2" conduit, screwed a base in to a board and mounted it to that. On the arm I just used two pipe brackets to hang the chains from. Pretty ugly for now. Once I have the corals acclimated to my MH I will use cable instead of chains.
The fixture cord can be run down the conduit.
