Wow!
Very nice tank! Lots of beautiful corals, I like your aquascaping a lot.
Got a better pic of that clam way up high, slightly right of middle? Maxima, Deresa, Squamosa?
What equipment are you running?

I don't really know what kind of clam it is. We've had it since it was really small though. I think it was like 2 inches when we got it and now it's about 5.

Beautiful tank!
Pic #1 right in the front left...the tricolor. Is it new? How long have you had it? I recently bought one, and just want to hear other experiences.

Thanks. We just bought at PK. We've had it for about 4 weeks. Seems to be doing really well. Lost a little bit of the purple tips at first but has come back fully. It opened up right away. We're giving it a lot of current to get in between those branches. It also is a residence for two crabs.:)
Were did you get yours?

Got mine from Fragcity along with a frag of "false" purple/blue monster (A. maryae). Seems to also be doing well, good PE at night..holding its color pretty well so far. Glad yours is doing well.

the pics were taken under 8 65w pc but I finally broke down this weekend and got a 2x250 hqi and 4x 54w t-5 combo. It's a lot brighter now. I'll post new pics soon under the new lights.
snyder2050
06-10-2007, 09:05 PM
We got the new lights so we could have sps anywhere. Before they were all on top. We picked up some nice pieces this weekend and my brother scored some of the lower light pieces we had.

Quite an upgrade in lighting. I hope you are acclimating with screen.
snyder2050
06-10-2007, 09:12 PM
We lowered the photo period and are slowing making it higher. It's 3 W more per gallon.
iVgOnMaD
06-10-2007, 09:49 PM
Yeah, just be careful because its the intensity of the light that can make your coral bleach, PC is not nearly as intense as MH, even if they are the same wattage.
Screen method works very good. I know many experienced reefer that like that method since it can be used on individual corals as well.
Another option is to only give them about 1hr/Day of MH light in the beginning and raise it an 1hr/Day after every week until you reach as many hours as you want.
Nick_Kun
06-11-2007, 04:51 AM
wow, from pcs to hqi and t5 HO, major light difference, thats good that you are doing a slow acclimation. Speaking of upgrading, I need to add some t5s to my tank.

is that a yellow rock anemone on the sand bed?
snyder2050
06-11-2007, 09:01 AM
We didn't go as far as an hour a day but we did go down to 1/2 with the halides and cut down a few hours on the t5s too. Everything is looking really good but we're watching closely for any signs of stress and will up the light very slowly.
We moved one coral down that had closed a little and it opened right back up.
Also I don't know if any one else has that combo but the moon lights are super bright. We're not really using them right now. I guess we're just not used to so many. We used to have about 1/4 of the moon lights.

is that a yellow rock anemone on the sand bed?
No it's a fungia plate. It's actually more orange.

We've had it for a few years. The clowns were bothering it recently but it's really hardy and we put up a barricade so they can't bury it anymore.

Nice tank! How long has it been running?
snyder2050
12-05-2007, 06:36 PM
It's been running for 7 years or so. But we moved it once from Encinitas to Vista about 4 years ago. We're really wanting to upgrade. 80g is just to small. We want to be able to grow our colonies nice and big but we can't resist buying new corals. So they just keep getting stuffed in there and the colonies keep getting snipped back. Or we keep a large frag and move the colony to our grow system.

I went from my initial little 55 starter reef (April, 2003) to my current 150 stony (June, 2007) and am amazed at how quickly a new tank can "shrink." However, I think that's the nature of this hobby. No matter how large you go, the tank is eventually going to seem smaller than you want. Therefore, I'm going to stick with this (VERY expensive) system for a long time! I think the key is creative, three-dimensional aquascaping using minimal LR, and selectively understocking the fish. Although this is a baby system and seeded almost entirely with some select aquacultured sps and lps frags, it's coming along nicely and I will post a build thread soon. FYI, your tank's maturity is an inspiration.
