You know what, I was just looking at brandon's old pictures of his old tank. It looks exactly like it. I'm getting this tank from a guy in LA. Maybe brandon can chime in.

Hmm...selling part, maybe in the summer...jk. I'm bringing this tank up with me to Cal Poly late summer.

- Nick

Nice score

LMK when you're ready to sell it.

Update:

Picked up the tank earlier this morning. Looks good, no scratches so far, the stand is a little beat up but is in good condition, canopy is bleh...so I'm putting that up for storage for now.

Im using one of these bad boys (250 or 400?) both have HQI ballast.

Nice sump, btw. Keep the pics coming as you add more goodies.

Nick_Kun

Yeap the blue throat is reef safe, but theyw ill nip and eat on snails and hermits though, which is why I'm not planning to get a clean up crew, I will let the acantharus (tangs) to graze on the algae.

Here is a quick canopy.

I would advise against stocking with the blue thread cardinals. I had about 7 these guys in my 30 inch cube and they didn't school as tight as they do in longer rectangular tanks. My chromis look awesome though, are cheap and school tight as they follow the seaswirl

I have 10 of these guys already in my 40gallon tank and the only reason fishes like these, also with chromis's is that there needs to be an aggressive fish in tank (I have a purple psuedo), so that they would stay together and school.

Update:

Water Test:
Alk - 9dkh (perfect)
Calcium - 420ppm (Target goal 480ppm)
Magnesium - 1280ppm (Targer goal of 1300ppm)
Nitrite - 0ppm
Nitrate - 0ppm
Amonia - 0 ppm

I finally drained the 40 yesterday and hopefully chelle will pick it up soon, it's a big eye sore in the garage.

Thursday (8th): Picked up some water at Scripps and did 40% Water Change.
Friday (9th): Picked up base rocks from "NEWGUY". Picked up some rubble as well for the future refugium.
Saturday (10th): Aquascaped the tank, not 100% happy but atleast its descent in my opinion. I was going for a reef slope with SPS corals going down.
Monday (12th): Installed Temporary Skimmer (coralife ss 65), hook in carbon in a bag and hung between the teeth of the overflow, made power center under the tank and hooked up the 400watt MH. Then later in the afternoon, broke down 40gallon and transfer all of the livestock over.

Ordered a couple of things:
- Pacific Coast 2000 Needle wheel skimmer (Mparkis)
- Dual 24" Tek T5 HO Retro, will be adding these but might add another set to surround the Lumenarc Reflector. (hellolights)
- 400Watt SE Reeflux 12K, will be replacing the Radiums. (Mparkis)
- 2 American DJ Power Center. (Guitar Warehouse)
- 12 Gallon 2 Part (2part****ions)
- Dual Head Pump for 2 Part Solution (2partsolutons)
- 2 Koralia 4's (will replace the Seio 1100 and 820)

Thanks alex. I actually thought I Lost that shrimp when I was moving stuff from the 40. He wedged himself preety good inside a very large rock and did not come out unti last night (weird).

great looking tank nick.

Thanks bro. To me, it looks like a big mess, the acros where a little bit stressed from the move. I had forgotten to put a heater and a powerhead in a tub where I had them sit for a little bit while I aquascape and their all pissed and show some brown...grrr.

Just got back from LA and picked up a bunch of Frags. Some really nice stuff at OC aquatics and Tongs. The only bad thing was that the trigger I wanted (Male Blue Jaw) did not survive the week when they where holding it for me so I half to go back in two weeks when they get a new one.

Things I picked up:
- Blue Millepora
- Pink w/Neon Green Tip Poccilopora
- Royal Blue (bright) Poccilopora
- ORA Yellow Green Acro (pillow)
- Also, one Large Blue/Green Gigas. Atleast 7-9"

Anyways, here are the pics.

Yeah, the gigas was a little PO when I acclimated him. He was attached on the bottom glass substrate when he was pulled out. The guy that helped me had a hard time prying his legs off the bottom glass. He's much happier today.

Pacific Coast PS-2000 needle wheel skimmer

"Amazing Skimmer, I was so anxious yesterday that I didn't even do a hot water and vinegar bath to remove all of the factory chemicals and it still produced a nice foamy skimate this morning"

Coralvue Reeflux 12K

"I can't believe it's bluer than the 20K Radiums and much brighter, but I think once it burns it, it won't be as blue".

Another LA Run. Went up to OC Aquatics, Tongs, Pacific Reef, Eye Candy and Fraggle Reefs New Store (small but really good stuff)

Things I picked up.

- Nathans Green Millie Frag
- Unknown Greenish/blue body Acro with Blue Tip Frag (can't wait to see what it turns into)
- Zoanthid Frags
- Huge Red with Grey mouth Zoanthid Colony
- Neon Green Prostata Colony
- Pink Milliepora Colony
- 4 Tiger Nassarius Snails
- Huge Colony of Neon Green Sinularia
- Picked up a Seaswirl type devise from Sean(maus42). The company that made this device went out of business and I'm lucky enough to get one of these. It's cool because it swirls left to right without having a return pipe hooked into it, all you need is a powerhead attached to the arm. Can't wait to get this setup.

I can't find my good camera so I'm just using my crappy 3.2 cybershot.

My Koralia in action!!!!

Some more pictures, finally got a hold of a good camera with macro.

Update:
- Got Rid of The Powder Brown Tang and The Female Blue Jaw. I think I'm sticking with smaller fishes for now. Looking into some rare fairy wrasses and some anthias...since everyones has lyretails in their tank, I might go with a harem of purple queens.

- Sump is about 90% finished. I had to re-silicone it today because of small leaks.

- Planning to add a remote refugium/prop tank next to my tank.

Skip the purple queen anthias (tuka or pascalus). They don't live.

Emoezekielsr5,

You are like me, who visit Tong's and OC Aquatics on a regular basis. They are so close to my parents' home. My parents' home is in the middle of those two locations (in Huntington Beach).

I bought 3 SPS colonies two weeks ago from Tongs. Almost bought another one last week but I want to check out the new stuffs at OC Aquatics this Sunday.

OC Aquatics will have a new shipment in this Sunday. I will visit them again.

Why buy a frag when you can get a nice big colony for just a little more...is my motto...whenever I visit those 2 stores.

By the way, Tongs have 4-5 of those small cute lyretail anthias that are only about 1.5 inches. Too bad my tank is under quarantine now or I would have bought them (4 for $80).

It was nice meeting you peter, i'd love to see your tank sometime, I'm thinking re-aquascaping and using some pvc like yours to hold the rocks.

I just spent the past 2 hrs researching anthias and I think I'm going with either bartlett's or resplendent anthias.

Bartlett are really pretty and bullet proof. If you really want something more rare, but not impossible, check out randall's, Lori, or princess (Pseudanthias smithvanizi) anthias.

LMK when you plan to re-aquascape...I've got leftover rods, and even the drill bits.

Updatea:

The GOOD!
- Custom sump is finally in. :)
- Added about 25lbs of Base Sand
- Starting to dose Kalk on a 5 gallon container
- My seahare is finally comming out of hiding and is really eating like a pig, picking the back glass.
- Added an eyelash/lawnmower blenny, also helping with the recent algae spread.
- Got some GSP (purple mat with neon green polyps) from Jeff (jareed101), kudos to you bro!

The BAD!
- My systems finally stablling, i'm still getting 10ppm of nitrates though, more water changes I guess.
- 2 of my clownfish died from some weird fin rot disease, I still have one big female that I'm thinking about pairing with a B&W ocellaris.
- One of my Cardinals decided to get too close to my sea-swirl, tried removing him but he just fell into the Magnifica below the return.

Anyways, I'm planning to add a remote refugium/frag tank next to my tank. I'm planning to do a 1" drain down next to the main tanks drain and then using a small pump for the return back into the fuge. Any suggestions, ideas? :)

Got bored at work so here's a quick sketch of the future remote tank that shares the same tank.

<--->PLANS<--->

- 26x20x15 Tan
- 24" Tall Open Stand where I can easy access supplements and food, will also house the future power center.
- 1" Drain and 1" return, connected to the main tanks sump.
- 5" Sandbed
- Small Red Mangrove Colony in the Center
- Rubbles
- Xenias and other soft corals (zonathids, nepthia, etc.)
- Chaeto and other macro algae for filtration for both this tank and main tank.
- A Pair of seahorse and maybe some pipe fish
- Low Flow
- 24" quad T5 setup for lighting.

Hey, what kind of pump are you using for your return?

You might be able to replace all those powerheads with some DIY Eductors (http://www.sdreefs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23750) under $5 ea.

I just set up a 90g semi-cube, its 36x24x24, with a dual return manifold with eductors on the outlets. Running a LittleGiant 3-MDQX-SC rated @ 1100GPH and 6.2 PSI, so at a 4' height I have two ~500GPH returns with eductors that are generating a water flow of ~1500GPH (3x the flow) each or more.

With a high pressure pump you would get much better results, more like a 5x increase in flow.

Just a thought... :)

Awesome tank BTW!!!

Nick_Kun

Thanks/ Eductors are cool and ive seen it on few reeftank, but the only rhing I dont like about them is that they prosuce a lot of eater but inly at a straight line. I dont mind the look of the two koralia and the seaswirl at all and with my current setup, ot creates great laminar flow and I don't have any dead spots.

I lost the algae battle bad and had to remove all of my livestock, lr, sand and clean the entire tank out of algae to try and eliminate it from comming back.

I picked up around 125Lbs of Large Premium Coraline covered rocks from Dean Benson from RC Socal Forums. I couldn't be happier, I got it for a really really good price, its full of of purple, red, orange coraline, 10 different kinds of zoanthids and mushrooms.

Right now, I'm debating wether to stay Bare Bottom like my previous 3 tanks (110 cube, 40 and 30 cube) and up the flow and stay with sps or option 2, add sand and just keep some really awesome LPS (ausie acans :P), rare softies and ORA sps pieces and have a bunch of fishes. I'm heading up to the OC this thursday or friday to pick up some livestock.

I'm not 100% happy with the aquascaping, I ended up with more rocks than I needed and I rushed to put the rocks in my tank cause I wanted to save the nice coraline growth.

UPGRADE COMMING SOON:
*** 250W Hamilton HQI Ballast on a SE Setup, Lumenarc III and XM10KBulb
*** 4x24" VHO URI Super Actinic around instead of T5's I had originally planned. Hopefully the Super Actinics washes out the yellow XM.
*** Option 1 (pure SPS) - Add 2 more hydor Koralia 4's
*** Harem of Lyretails and a small Chevron Tang

First, a short video of how my tank was :(

Hey Nick have you seen the forum on RC on bryopsis? I was browsing and I read up a little on it. I'm guessing you might have seen it, anyways it's probably too late huh?

Most all the valida/ nana (tri-color) variations that are to found have a pale cream to greenish (somewhat pale) brown flesh with the growth tips being purple. Lot's of purple means that they're growing quickly, little purple means it's not growing so much. An example of one in a fast grow phase, relocating it caused most of the purple to retreat to just a little bit of the tips and the growth rate to diminish greatly.

Hey chris, the light is purty yellow but thanks to UVL Super Actinics, it gives it a natural look like when you are diving...I love it, I'm tired of the blue look. My corals actually look better in my opinion. Oh and I love having at actinics at night.

I like the bb. :)
One question. Is that a box full of macro algae in the corner instead of putting it in a fuge? If so, how's that working for you? I don't have a sump or fuge and have been trying to think of a way to have some chaeto or culpera in my system and that looks like it might work for me (in a smaller version).
Anyway I always enjoy your pictures, great tank. Thanks!

Nick_Kun
06-24-2007, 11:36 AM
The Macro in the box is just there temporary while my fuge is being setup. I just don't like it hanging out like that though. I've only had that for a few weeks so I don't know how it really affect my tank.

Update:

I'm really digging my new lighting setup now, the mixture of the 10Kxm and 4x24" VHO around the Lumenarc definately makes the tank look bright and more natural than the reeflux 12k setup I used to run. My SPS are responding really well too and ever since upgrading, i've noticed rapid growth and color. I'm a true 10K believer now. I guess the added par really helped.

Whats new:
- Only 3 of the 6 Anthias survived :(
- Added a Fuge to my sump, just a HOB fuge, fits snugly down the cabinet.
- Finally filled up the 2x55 Gallon Drums I picked up from Robert. Now I only need to do 1 scripps run a month, yay :)

Gotta Love the Par

Nick, what is your opinion on the XM 10K vs. the Reeflux 10K?

Thanks everyone. I still haven't installed the calcium reactor yet, still waiting on my AC3 Jr. to come in. I'm hoping to have my tank complete by the end of the month. Going on a week trip up to Norcal and I wanted to automate the tank.

Auto Top Off:
I have an auto top off system hooked into a 55Gallon Drum from Robert(igotcrabs) filled with RO/DI Water so I should be good with evap. I usually get around 2-3 gallon everyday with the the VHO and MH on.
Calcium Reactor, hopefully I can get everything set before I leave for the trip, it's going to be one long week of testing to get the effluent right and the AC3 jr should take care of any heating/cooling issues.

I'm also picking up some Frags tonight and will be taking some updated pictures. So far so good, I haven't moved anything in my tank, i've only recently added a very small Palani tang.

- Medium Size Colony of ORA Neon Green Birdsnest

Couple of questions Nick...

how'd your sump design work out? mine was a "flop"
what type skimmer did you go with?

I'm either going to shut down C.Maximus for awhile to work out all the "bugs" or just SELL and start from scratch...I haven't decided yet....
