I believe that there are cruises to Hawaii but I think that the rock is protected and collecting anything else would require a permit.

if you could "steal the reef" there would be no reef left. so NO!

hanamba bay sucks ,the worst spot ever to go snorkelling in oahu unless you have yur PADI liscence and you dive the sides of the bay close to the mouth!!! i have never seen so much dead coral and so many retarted haole tourists climbing all over the reefs, and the funny thing is that you have to watch a video before you can even go snorkelling which tells you not to climb on the reefs. GO BACK TO THE MAINLAND YOU STUPID HAOLE TOURISTS!!! SAVE A REEF GROW YOUR OWN!!!!!!

oh ya cool pics hope you had fun !!!

lol cardiff reef. I agree that people were stepping too much on the rock work. There were some very nice looking pink corals but the Hawaiian islands are pretty young and the waters are cooler than the southern pacific reefs which have more coral growth.

wow wheres all the corraline? in the reef hobby we use coraline algae as a basis to show how established our tanks are but what does that show having all brown rocks?/

I believe that typically our tanks are kept at a higher calcium level than that of most ocean environments. I wouls imagine that since the reefs that I snorkeled at are close to shore and that since the hawaiian islands are not as developed as southern pacific reefs that it doesnt surprise me that there wasnt much of the typical purple coraline that we strive for.

That, and being so close to the island itself you get some heavy runoff. The best reefs are usually less frequented by tourists and more for the hardcore divers or locals that know about them. Head to Australia or Fiji for some nice reef diving. BTW, awesome pics with your uw camera...I know how hard it is to get a good uw shot of a fish thats trying to swim away from you :)
