There is a misunderstanding of parasites that have been slowly going from one tank to another, such as the red bugs here in San Diego, and I want to make sure people are aware.

The big one this summer seems to be the red bugs. There are two threads that are very relevant and beneficial for everyone to read. They are on www.reefs.org and on reefcentral. The first is the instructions on how to remove and the second is more anecdotal.

Red (white/black) bugs are not easy to see but will likely be found on most people's sps if you look carefully enough and know what you are looking for. They do kill sps (although not initially) and will spread quickly.

Please read the threads from Dustin (www.reefs.org) and the red bug threads in the sps forum in reefcentral to find out more information. The only known cure for red bugs is interceptor (or removing all the sps) which will, if treated correctly, kill all the red bugs and may kill your copepods/crabs/shrimps but should not kill your snails or harm your other fish/corals.

Other parasites have also been found in people's tanks locally such as monti eating nudis, etc. You can read about these from reefs.org and RC as well. Just a friendly note that the clubs in LA are actively quarantining the problems but I've noticed the SD people are a little slower about this.

Yup I got the red bugs from somone locally, I had to remove all my acros and treat in a HT. Interceptor worked great! No red bugs for a couple of months now. I QT everything in my frag tank now, which can be nuked with interceptor easily if needed.
