and build you a stand ;)
That is a perfect spot for the tank. I forgot to tell you, maybe you could plumb the 55 that's on the other side of the wall together with this system.
Everything is looking good.
Still not too late for a CL. ;)

Yeah but he is gonna be busy helping me with the plumbing.. He's probably not gonna have time to build a stand.. After looking at the tank and the entertainment center I just decided to let Socal build the stand.. It's in the den so it's gotta match up with the rest of the furniture.. Plumb the 50 Gal huh?? Don't give me more ideas.. :D

Forget the G2, go with the Octopus skimmer from ReefTank and p/u from CA.

Anyway you can get the Octopus Skimmer modded for a gate valve??

For lighting, have you thought about this?

You can get the 6 bulb fixture and add 2 more SLR icecap reflectors/and bulbs to make it an 8 bulbs unit.

The UltraSolaris with AquaScience bulbs is awesome.

If you have a canopy that will fit it. The height is not that tall but the length is 48". I was thinking of getting it but my canopy is 48.5 inches in length but only for 9" in width for that length. My canopy is actually 18" in width but there are some areas in my canopy that only allows 47" in lenght due to a verticle brace bar.

Just finished looking at that site.. They also have a 6 bulb fixture w/80 watt. I guess I could go that route. It would still be more wattage if I did that rather than getting a 8 bulb fixture w/54 watt

Don't forget you are lighting a 48"x30" surface. Five T5 bulbs only cover 1/3 of the surface. Come over and I'll show you. With my 10 the back is dark

Even with the 10 bulbs you are running the back of your tank is still dark??

You cannot get the 80 watts fixture because the length of the fixture is 60". Your tank's length is only 48".

You could actually gey 2 fixtures for a total of 12 bulbs of the 48" one but it would cost you a lot of dineros.

The total width of the 2 fixtures would be 11" x 2 = roughly 22", still plenty of room to add a few more solo slr reflectors/bulbs.

But then again, with 12 bulbs, it would be already brighter than Kamil's 10 bulbs fixtures.

Kamil's fixture of Aquatinics is nice, and I have seen it in person. However, if you are going to put the lights in the canopy, the way to do it is the Solaris fixture. It is better than the Icecap slr retrofit T5's.

Daniel

those solaris fixtures are so damn expensive!

over on RC, Grim Reefer suggests the 5 bulb fixture from aquactinics over the 6 bulb fixture from TEK (SLS) b/c of the AA's fan and the ability to lower temps across the bulbs. He has a thread regarding light output of cooled and non-cooled bulbs, and claims that the 5 AA fixture puts out more light than the 6 TEK fixture. correct me if i'm wrong, but that is what i gathered from a quick browse of the thread.

what makes the solaris fixture so much better?

CyberGuy
01-11-2007, 02:14 PM
Someone at reefcentral stated that the reflectors of the solaris is even better than the Aquatinics one...and I thought that the aquatinics is good since when you look at it, it gives you a good reflection, unlike the bad reflectors of the TEK system.
Now one of the good thing about the Solaris is the ballast. They were saying that the Osram ballast is really good and it is heat controlled and does not need to overdrive the bulbs like the IceCap does.

Also, the Solaris uses German Aquascience bulbs which are among the best.

Just to add to this topic. I heard reefgeek will soon carry the ATI fixtures which are commonly used in Europe. These are supposed to be really good fixtures, I have seen them and they do look sleek. The only drawback will be the price.

I also heard Ice cap will debut its T5 fixture soon, and rumors are that it might blow away the ATI fixtures, who knows.

I need to have a chat over at reefgeek.

thanks for posting the link Kamil.

i was mistaken about the number of bulbs, TGR used a 4x39w TEK fixture. regardless, he claims the fans will help w/the light output, this is his quote:

All I can say about the Aquactinics for sure is that the reflectors they use are as good or maybe even a tad better than the Ice Caps. Combine that with the active cooling they gotta be putting out more light than the 6 lamp Tek.

Stand and canopy should be ready within a week or so.. Still debating about my lights as to how many. I am definitely going with the Icecap T5 Retrofit but since my tank is wide I was thinking of doing either 8 or 10 bulbs..I could even go as far as 12 but I think that is overkill. Do you guys think 10 is too much??

Nice. I would go with the 10 if it fits. How wide is it?

It's 30 inches wide.. (Canopy) Reefgeek says that the 8 bulb configuration lights are about 20 inches which gives me another 10 inches for extra lights, moonlights etc.. So that is why I was thinking about adding 2 more bulbs.. Adding 4 making it 12 is probably overkill and I dont want to have a heat issue..

No I didnt want to put anything that is permanent in case you need to adjust it. Well I found the culprit to my leaking. I was missing a washer from the union. I've got the water flowing but I'm having trouble adjusting everything. Either the pump is too fast or I keep getting that gurgling noise in my overflow.. Got some questions for ya Kamil!!

Wow what a simple fix. :-) Maybe the gurgling is a comforting sound?

nanoreefbro
02-24-2007, 04:21 PM
It's been over 24h since I told how to solve the problem and you haven't cut the damn thing yet

Well I did cut it this morning..:D I've been fighting this cold and it has been kicking my butt. So yesterday I didnt do anything to it.. I did a search on Reef Central last night and noticed people are drilling holes in their overflow pipe.. Did you do that Kamil? Today I cut it about 3 inches like you said. It got rid of most of the gurgling but I'm still having trouble getting water to the pump. It's as if the water flow can't keep up with the pump. When that happens I'm not getting enough flow into the tank. So I'm coming to the conclusion that my baffles may be too high. Oh yeah when I turned everything off my sump overflooded.. :o

Joseph start getting some of that Airborne effervescent tabs. It makes a drink. Get some coldeze lezenges too. Helps you fight it better.

I double checked mine and it is 3" below the teeth of the OB.
It's time I pay you a visit. Send me your location, I'll try to be there around noon++ tomorrow.

FINALLY!!!:D We got it working.. I had to raise that overflow pipe back to where it was because too much water was draining into the sump. Also my pump is pushing out 1270 GPH.. But the baffles were definitely too high. We removed the first baffle and now water gets to the pump chamber alot quicker.. We tweaked it pretty good and I am ready to set it up next weekend.. :D :D :D I am playing weekend warrior this week but if you are coming down next weekend I will be off for sure..

I should have gotten that when I first started feeling sick.. I've been drinking alot of tea with brandy in it.. :D (hiccup)

The height of the drain pipe has nothing to do with how much water flows into the sump. It's regulated by the valve below. Remove the pipe completely and the flow rate will not change.

Water Test complete.. Updated a few new pics..
Well I removed the baffle and that seemed to do the trick.. I was still getting gurgling noise after I cut it but I raised it back up and seems to be alot quieter..

YOu going to put all new water init,or use most of old water?

I used some water from the old tank but most of it was new.. Since I was setting the old tank back up (no sand at the bottom) for my fish, and corals I had to make a couple of trips to the water store over on Palm Avenue.. I dont think I've ever gone through a bucket of salt that quick.. :D

I have a recommendation. Your drain pipe appears to just be an open pipe. Thats why your getting the loud gurgeling sound. I made a durso standpipe for my drains and they made un almost unreal amount of change to the water noise. Super quiet now.

hybrid240
03-04-2007, 01:33 PM
Might cost you about 2-3 buck to make it. google durso standpipe. you will be very happy. Looks great though, Where are you located. I would love to see this thing in person.

2 URI Aquasun 10K
4 URI Super Actinic 420nm
2 URI Actinic White 12K

The bulb configuration I am going to use is from Reefgeek once they get the bulbs in stock..
1 GE 3000K Daylight
1 ATI AquaBlue Special
1 UV Lighting Actinic White

Yeah that is what I thought.. But because of where I have my tank sitting with the canopy on top of it there isn't any breathing space for the hot air to escape..

Wow, that is a nice tank! Your pieces are so big it looks like one would take up my entire 24 gal! Oh I can't wait for my stuff to grow. I went the cheap route buy 1 or 2 head small frags of lots of stuff. Now I just have to sit on my butt and wait for growth :(. Very nice tank.

Thanks.. That is still the best way to do your tank.. Get a bunch of frags.. So you are thinking about upgrading yet?? :D

I have an extra coralife therm if you want to make sure. Everything looks like its doing good though. Jessy, it took me 8 months and then i not only upgraded my saltwater but my freshwater too :-)

keep it. It's a nice show fish. Although, it takes an experienced to appreciate that beauty.
