Are those Anthias?

Yes, and lots of them! Beautiful tank Peter! Excellent aquscaping to use the most of the tank's heigth. Very nice.

Thanks! I decided on pillars threaded onto 3/8" acrylic rods. There was no way I was going to risk balancing live rock in a 30" tall tank that's only 18" deep :D

Some pics of the anthias:

Thanks all!

Nano, I actually wanted sand, and maybe still do...but for now, I prefer to be able to suck out any detritus piles (mostly tomini tang poop :D )....

Chanas, I have 3 bartlett, 3 lyretails, and 1 dispar. Trying to get more dispar currently. I'd like 3, 3, and 3 at least.

Thanks for all the kind words. Just back from vacation. Two acros RTNed :( All others growing. I think one was killed by another touching it. The other, have no idea. pH got pretty low while I was gone. Day long maintenance today. Woohoo :)

SDguy

Some new pics. Now that my calcium reactor is dialed in, I think the stability is really helping the corals to grow at a more consistent rate. Also, I'm now adding kalk with a peristaltic pump throughout the day to counteract the pH drop from the calcium reactor.

You mean just to the left of the stag and under the green table? It's some sort of tort I got from Dr. Mac. Green base, brown coralites, blue polyps. It's been pretty unhappy with more and more light being blocked, so I actually moved it this weekend. I wouldn't mind fragging it once it's settled in, and showing some PE.

gawd.....what's the secret to getting them to show those colors at such a high contrast? Food? Lighting?
I think I saw similar mushrooms at Vets Pets, but the colors were a bit drab.

SDguy
06-21-2007, 05:56 AM
Lighting makes a huge difference. 20K bullbs and/or actinics would probably make them look even better. Like when people take pics of their zoas with lots of actinic....they look crazy good.

BTW, if you want to see high contrast, go take a look at the oversaturated pics people post in the SPS forum on RC. Ridiculous...

Being from florida, I have had many blue and queen angels. They are really best for fish only tanks and they can be aggressive. They also get stressed being around too many small fish.

did you upgrade your flow yet? could be old bulbs?

- Nick

SDguy
10-14-2007, 07:07 PM
Bulbs are new. Even corals in very high flow (ie some milles) have progressively turned more brown, coinciding perfectly with the massive amounts of food I was adding to fatten up freshly imported anthias. There's no question its nutrients. The question is, what kind. Simply compounds like PO4 or NO3, or more complex organic molecules. The recent hookup of ozone should take care of those...

Nick_Kun
10-14-2007, 07:09 PM

I wonder what would happen with beer? Will the fish get fat and burp all the time?

Will dosing bottled Nitrifying bacteria cultures sold at LFS have the same effect?

BTW people be careful to not only use vodka as a sole carbon source or you could end up with a mono-culture that will cause more problems than you had before. The key is using as many different carbon sources as possible to create a diverse bacterial population.

SDguy
10-15-2007, 08:36 AM
The theory behind monoculture, especially its detriment, is suspect at best. Nonetheless, I will probably go with the vodka>sugar>vinegar approach once I determine my level. Though I doubt I will go so far as to introduce other bacterial cultures like probidio or zeo stuff...

How much vodka do you dose?
Is it like zeovit? Are you just trying to clean up your water, to get your corals colored up? Sorry if this has already been asked, i could not find it.
Very interested.

SDguy
11-05-2007, 01:33 PM
The idea behind vodka dosing is just a simplified version of zeo. Through vodka, you are adding a carbon source, allowing bacteria that consume the big three (C, N, P) to grow in greater number. The idea is that since C is limiting in the reef system, adding C allows the bacteria to grow and consume the excess N and P. Sugar and vinegar dosing is the same idea. Then your OVERSIZED, POWERFUL protein skimmer simply removes the excess bacteria. This is a very crucial part of the process. If you don't export the bacteria, you're not accomplishing anything...the N and P are still in your tank.

I personally am doing it because I think I have high N and especially P. Even though my Salifert NO3 and PO4 kits show completely zero, my brown corals say otherwise. :) It's not surprising, considering my fishload.

Zeo is fancier, with you controlling what types of bacteria you are actually growing, as well as also feeding your corals directly.

As to how much I'm using, I just recently started. I'm up to about 16mL vodka per day. I've started to now incorporate sugar and vinegar to add variety... Colors are changing slowly, so I'm very excited about this. Hopefully my humilis will actually turn blue one day

The anthias are a PITA, but I love 'em. I basically prepare/thaw/mince the food when I get home from work. I then feed tiny portions the entire time I am home until lights out....like one long feeding or twelve tiny feedings...however you want to look at it :)

very nice tank peter. I too am contemplating vodka dosing but I first want to try weekly water changes with weekly replacement of phosban.

Like I said, the vodka worked great on many of my acro colors!! But I also had a fair bit of STN at the bases of several colonies (which I can't really blame on the vodka, since I've had it before, at times....). And I had several shrimp die (they stopped breeding the moment I began dosing, so this, among other reasons, leads me to blame the vodka).

I'm just going to have to move on and find another way to keep THIS many fish in the tank AND still have nice acro colors....but for now, I have to suffer with my pink mille looking like this  ....oh well....

Nothing. They are still there. They cruise through all the euphyllia around the lower half of the tank. The RBTA is up top. They never went for it. I figured if any clowns could be mixed in my tank, it would be skunks and percs. David M thought so too (he said any others...clarks, tomatoes, etc would be a no go).

That day you were here my maroon got so mad at me cleaning too close to her nem that she launched out of the tank trying to get me!
She flew about 2 feet above the tank and hit the the floor!
As I had her in my hands, I was real tempted to trade her in, fortuneatly for her she takes good care of nems, isn't mean to fish, and doing good w/ mate.

Well, I have yet to buy a hanna unit for PO4, so unfortunately all I can say is that my NO3 and PO4 test 0 on salifert :o I know, I know....

Acro colors have gone drab, when not two months ago (when I was vodka dosing) they were incredible. I began dosing again last week. In case you're wondering, I stopped for two reasons. 1. The acro basal STN 2. Shrimps were not molting properly.

The STN: Had bouts of it before vodka, and after (now) so I'm hard pressed to blame the vodka.

The shrimps: Definitely affected by the vodka. The moment I began dosing, even a tiny amount, the cleaner shrimps stopped carrying eggs.

Well, now I want those colors back, and with only one cleaner shrimp in the tank, I don't really care about the shrimp issue :D

Yea def takes LARGE amt 3-4x recommended for gfo to lower alk. Whats your po4 reading and also what is the color of your sps pale or deep colored? NO3? I have noticed alk problems 2-3 weeks after the fact when alk is an issue.

I had an alk drop recently, possibly from GFO, though I didn't use that much, so not sure. Plus an issue with constant STN on heavily shaded bases of several acros, which has been ongoing for many months.

Let's just say it's not the golden age for my acros right now :D My euphyliia look flawless though

I prefer the name white tiger goby...they go by many others. AW (where I bought them) calls them gecko gobies. Priolepis nocturna is the scientific name. Very cryptic fish...always behind rocks/in caves, so a treat to see when they come out to snatch food.
