I have a few interesting reads on Goniopora.
With this being one of the hardest of corals to keep, and yet it seems to have the most appeal to new hobbyists, it is imperative that we learn what makes this coral tick. If we don't we will surely loose this beauty forever.
I have dedicated my last 6 years of the hobby to this coral. I have much knowledge to share and will be writing an article detailing everything that went on with my tank, and the reproduction, as soon as i get my journals out of storage.
TAKE NOTE:
There are some notes that need to be heeded with this coral. They are indeed hard to take care of. Here are a few things that I have noticed over the last few years of keeping them. There CAN be good results with this coral. Here are my findings.
(and I'm not saying this as truth, just my experience.)
1. They require fairly clean water. I have found that ORP reading between 250 - 300 they like.
2. The water motion must be in a moderate flow, and it is best to have a wavemaker. I have found that 45 seconds to 1 minute gives the best results. It is also important not to have the "Arms/Tentacles" perform a severe flapping motion. Slight flapping during the water current change is fine. But not on a constant basis. Think "Wafting" as guideline for current.
3. They do like intense light. No Goniopora should be kept without a bare minimum of VHO lighting
4. And lastly be ever so careful of tips and falls. Snails can easily push them off their base. I highly recommend an underwater epoxy to help this coral stay in place.
5. Elegance corals seem to do this guy an injustice. With the combination of the demands of the elegance for pristine water quality (ORP 325 - 350) and its aggressiveness, these two are not really suited as tank mates, in tanks of 75 gallons or less. (In my experience)

I am intrigued, what is this ORP reading you speak of.
"The oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of a marine aquarium is a measure of its water's relative oxidizing power. ORP has often been recommended to aquarists as an important water parameter, and some companies sell products (equipment and chemicals) designed to control ORP. Many who recommended ORP control have convinced aquarists that it is a measure of the aquarium water's relative "purity," despite this never having been clearly demonstrated.
ORP, at its heart, is very, very complicated. It is perhaps the single most complicated chemical feature of marine aquaria that aquarists will typically encounter. ORP involves many chemical details that are simply unknown, either for seawater or for aquaria. It involves processes that are not at equilibrium, and so are difficult to understand and predict. Even more daunting is the fact that the chemicals that control ORP in one aquarium might not even be the same chemicals that control ORP in another aquarium, or in natural seawater.
ORP is an interesting, if complicated, measure of the properties of water in a marine aquarium. It has uses for monitoring certain events in aquaria that impact ORP but may be otherwise hard to detect. These events could include immediate deaths of organisms, as well as long term increases in the levels of organic materials. Aquarists who monitor ORP, and who do other things that seem appropriate for maintaining an aquarium (such as increasing aeration, skimming, use of carbon, etc.) may find monitoring ORP to be a useful way to see progress.
ORP measurements are very susceptible to errors. Aquarists are strongly cautioned to not overemphasize absolute ORP readings, especially if they have not recently calibrated their ORP probe. Rather, ORP measurements are most useful when looking at changes in measured ORP over time.
Some aquarists use oxidizers to raise ORP. These additions may benefit some aquaria, and maybe in ways that aren't demonstrated by changes in ORP alone. I've never added such materials to my aquarium. In the absence of convincing data otherwise, such additions seem to me to be potentially riskier than is justified by their demonstrated and hypothesized benefits."
Check the chemistry forums over at reefcentral for more info.

Nice looking tank ... plus -- you are lucky to have a neighbor who didn't royally fcuk up your tank -- I've had friends who keep reefs jack my sh!t up before -- but they usually only really jack up the freshwater crap -- like feeding waaaaaaaay too much because the fish feed like fighting pigs & they love to watch it!
Now -- I just don't vacation ... not!

You have 160W PC's on your 30g (even though coralife only makes 130W) , consider putting the Goni at the top portion of the tank. So it can get as much light as possible.

so is try to give someone advice, especially from people thats been reefing for a long time :-P
Me and others are trying to help you out, if you can't take critisizim from me/ other reefers then dont post. This is a frendy form, dont post sh!t if you dont want people to comment. I'm not the only one trying to help you out, sokal said some stuff which made you mad so you deleted your post, but hey the truth hurts. Your trying to do big things, but your not even researching the stuff you get from other people. I didn't ever know about the coral you got and GAD pointed out to me it was flower pot. Not to long ago he told me flowerpot was hard to take care of. Good luck with that! I got into this hobby with a friend that helped me out alot but I did research on everything I own before I bought something. I would never question my friends knowledge especially if I needed help. I have more to say but I'm done with this sh!t. Good luck!

OK about that goni i sold. 1, i didn't buy it. i saved it from a tank where it wasn't too happy. 2, i told BallZDeeP about goniopora and it's reputation for not doing well in captivity. 3, research has shown that it's the green varieties that fair most poorly. i've heard of much better success with the red/purple variants. furthermore, when i got this coral it was nothing more than a white skeleton with slime on it. the slime was the only indication that this coral was alive. the polyps were completely retracted and totally bleached. it had gone missing in a tank for several months. just out of curiosity i took this coral in instead of just throwing it in the trash. it made a good come back in my 20gal under less than pristine conditions. now i'm not saying that it's going to do great & prosper in BallZDeeP's tank, but this piece should've been dead several months ago. for a piece that's known for being hard to keep, having fallen into darkness in my friends 70gal should've spelled its end. just my 2cents.

posting picture is not giving a license for lectures. you want to give them, fine, but he then has the 'right' to tell you to f#@k off. YOU also were being sensitive.
so i will give you your own advice right back... you dont want to be told to f#@k off on the internet, THEN DONT POST LECTURES!
you dont own the ocean...you dont own this site... you have no more 'moral' right to experiment on 'hard' corals than anybody else,
