Yeah I was thinking the dye thing too. Variety Marine Aquatics used to get these in all the time, if its dyed, the color will eventually fade out.

Hmm...I'm interested in finding out if it is truly dyed. If this piece is indeed dyed it would be interesting to document the process in reviving the specimen back to its true from. From my understanding, dyed specimens are stressed specimens that have lost their zooanthelle or bleached. Looks like I have a new experiment. I'll also keep an eye on the skimmer for any signs of the dye.

Im not sure exactly what you are asking, but if you are referring to the photos posted, the lights are on when the photos were taken.

Nick, thanks for the link. I was going to use that article as a guideline for this experiment. As for Harold, we have come to an agreement if the coral is indeed dyed. Thanks again Harold. Either way its a win win situation for all. :)

Thanks for the clarification. I'm running zones on my tank. 1/2 of the tank is 250w XM 20Ks and the other half which the colt specimen is located at is under 250w Radium 20Ks. Unfortunately, I do not run actnics.

Yes, that coral definitely looks like the dye types that surface on the marine market from time to time.

Deffinately dyed. May not be a big deal. I've dealt with many of these over the years. Imo, it should stay pink for about 3 or 4 months. If conditions are right it should go back to natural color. Sometimes they bleach out real white and never recover. Don't mess with it much while in transition, thats when they are most vulnerable.

I've seen these red (bright)pink green blue purple- these are not natural colors for the colt coral and are very obvious and easy to avoid. They really are the exact same colors as the local candy for sale in Indonesia, It's a areal trip. Good luck with it.

normally they dye the more textured colts like the kenyans or neptheas. If its more like a regular colt (very soft) those usually aren't dyed. That being said, yours definetly looks dyed.

Update. After answering to many posts, PMs, etc. Its obvious that the coral is dyed. The proof is in the pudding. As you can see the dye matches the coralline algae. On the good note its still okay. Hasn't melted yet.
