Hi, I have been setting up my new 90 gallon tank with my dad. When we ran it for the first time we noticed the overflow box was very loud. We put something on the return to reduce the flow from the pump and it stopped the noise. This thing was a big l shaped 1/2 inch PVC thing. We got a return sprayer nozzle to put on, thinking it would do the same thing. The noise came back though. Does anyone have any ideas how to stop it without making any major plumbing changes. Please be free to ask questions.

What overflow style do you have? Any photos?

What overflow style do you have? Any photos? It is just a single pipe overflow box. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180711/a0bceb72b07b7a6c1e97a58cd4157b76.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180711/dc7888ddfbdde3aece05597b763adae4.jpg

Maggie muffler. I use one. Instant silence.

The Herbie drain is my favorite. I did on my last 2 tank builds 180 and 150 gallon tanks. Completely silent. However it requires 3 holes in your overflow

The Durso drain is a good way if you have 2 as a next best option in my opinion

Lastly. You could use a Maggie muffler as an alternative to the above...

I have a question/comment.
If you have a single drain pipe, and a snail or fish or any floatsam get into that intake and block the pipe the contents of your sump could end up on the floor. Something like this happened to me once when my mother-in-law was visiting. You think a pipe is noisy, be careful with a single drain, it can be a mother.

You should have been expecting something like that Kris. NOTHING good happens when ones mother-in-law comes to visit.
