Story and equipment:
I designed and hand made this reef vase. Its featured on multiple diy forums. With over 3k views and many many positive comments. This was a work of love challenging myself and I ended up creating a piece of art. I had seen many other nano vases that were ok. Nothing amazing but definately peaked my interest in the nano arena. So i set out my journey. I built this setup addressing every issue a nano setup usually has. The stand was hand made and cut out of plexiglass with a built in auto top off fresh water reservoir. There is a float valve in the return pump chamber that keeps the water perfectly refilled with little to no maintaince. I wanted the most amount of water because as you know the more water you have the less fluctuations in water parameters. So I built a sump into the bottom of the stand. With baffles that separate the return pump from the main sump allowing me to put macro alge or more filter media ceramic or live rock.
The vase its self is a very clear glass with very little imperfections allowing nearly 340° of viewing with the only obstruction being the light stand which is also clear Plexi. The light is a Skye led which is a combo 6 watt daylight driver and a 6 watt actinic driver. included is a single timer. If you wanted you could add a second timer and the blue and white could be controlled separately. Included is a 100 watt eheim heater, a ***1/10 HP chiller***, and a ***tunze 9004 micro skimmer***. I also have a bubbler stick in the sump for gas exchange because I designed the return and overflow as such that there is little to none surface disturbance on the top increasing the viewing angle of the tank. When I designed this I wanted the least amount of items crowding the tank. So there is no power heads or and visible cords of any sort. The overflow to the sump had to be cut through the bottom of the vase and all the way through the middle of the ato reservoir. Multiple bulkheads has to be used for this.
Now I asked myself how do I get the water to the Vase without disturbing the aesthetics of the build. After a long arduous brain storm I figured to send the return up the overflow. I used hard acrylic tubes and bent them to my will and cut and split the top so I could redirect the flow in 2 directions at the tank. Which works very well there are no dead spots and with the Rio 800+ there is probably toooo much flow and I should restrict it a bit.
Livestock:
black sand, live rock, bright green and red ZOA's, purple sh rooms, and a super bright red shroom. Green cloves, metallic green star polyp, Xenia, green and orange lobo, green leather, rainbow mini maxi nem, green fuzzy shroom, mangrove, and chaeto. Not to forget the sexy shrimp and cleanup crew.
Its time for another project and this beautiful work of art needs to go to someone else who can design the contents of the tank into their own work of art.
I'm not looking to make ANY money off of this. I have a expense sheet including every component and hours of labor to build the setup to completion. Not including the setup of livestock and tuning of everything
And it comes to $850.
This is including everything in the pics whats stated above and more. A beautiful *****in nano reef vase.
