Industrial Design is all about S...E...X...Y...!!!
its still a work-in-process but coming along rather nicely.

anyone know where I can find a BLACK-colored RO membrane housing?

That's cool, it is like the Apple of reverse osmosis systems. It can actually be left out in the open instead of stuffed in the garage or under the sink.

Till the filters get nasty & ugly thanks to wonderfull SoCal water.

Then it will look cool, like science! :what:

Maybe that's why he's looking for black housing

actually i was hoping to find just the membrane housing in black to match the black-and-clear design characteristics. already have fittings, water line, and ASOV valve all in black. The filter canisters should indeed stay clear for visual reference of the pre-filters.
Thanks for the Apple analogy, that is kinda their typical design style. Perhaps if Steve Jobs had drank RO/DI water all the time....hmmm

That looks freakin sweet! And for the ro housing maybe paint one black? I've never seen a black one

Ok, I finally finished my first prototype.
Fully water tested for leaks and operational capability

Open Stats are as follows:
- 5-stage, 100 gpd Reverse Osmosis and Deionization water filtration system
- 1/2" acrylic upper and lower deck with 1" acrylic support rods.
- Upper mount 100 gpd RO membrane with acrylic protection shroud
- "Hidden Plumbing" hose routing and fittings (rear-mounted ASOV valve)
- Rolling casters and dual lift handles for mobility
- Stainless Steel hardware and John Guest plastic fittings (with C-clips)
- All parts brand new, including pre-filters, RO membrane, and DI resin

Separation of deck (for filter changes and/or maintenance) requires removal of only 4 screws!

The Bad News?
Cost of Time and Materials would make this a $500 R/O system, Not exactly economically feasible, but then again I didn't build this for the purpose of selling it.....think of it as more of a "proof of concept" project. I suppose I could build these on special order for anyone wanting a premium water system that is somehow visible or on display.

You could have it made in china, but then a month later you would see the market flooded with your product for cheaper than your wholesale cost.

How are you suppose to access the cartridges when they need replacing? There does not look to be enough space to get a wrench in there to grip the canister either.

Four simple screws completely release the lower carriage from the rest of the system. Then use a filter wrench as normal. (yes, there is enough gap)
I pre-drilled and TAPPED both ends of those support rods to accept the mounting screws....something nearly impossible to do without a good drill press, squaring vise, and tap set.

Also notice in the final version that I elected to move the handles to the outboard...for two reasons: 1) to make way for a top mounted RO membrane (was considering side saddle or even UNDER the lower deck with larger wheels) and 2) so that handle removal is not necessary to release the lower carriage (just the four screws). Industrial design does take ergonomics and ease of maintenance into consideration too : )
Oh, that being said, I made sure this system could be laid on its side during maintenance too (an important point)

Actually, I specified the recycled six-pack-ring plastic that is harvested from dead bottle-nose dolphins. :demon:
lol, just kidding of course

It doesn't look like there is enough of a gap below the canisters to unscrew them or even fit the wrench in.

It' beautiful and dolphin safe.

You've got me thinking all nostalgic about the sweet taste of beer canned in easy to carry 6-pack plastic rings, empties tossed into the back seat-not for recycling.

It doesn't look like there is enough of a gap below the canisters to unscrew them or even fit the wrench in.

The canisters tapper inward, so there is plenty of space for the filter wrench (I too had to use one to load the prefilters) At the very top, however, the canister ever-so-lightly touch each other....this on purpose to provide stability and strength in the unit by robbing it of the flex that is normally there. Stainless steel nipples connect them instead of typical plastic fittings. You can literally pick up this unit by the canisters with no problems. Stainless steel screws also attach the tops to the 1/2' decking

I figured as much cuz everything looked so clean, heavy duty and well thought out but I couldn't tell by the angle of the pics. I know we've all got to the final step of the instructions (yeah, sometimes I read the instructions) and had a Home Simpson "DOH!" moment.

there is of course a fallacy to my designs......yes well-built but WAY inefficient in terms of cost. As I am NOT an engineer, not a carpenter, amd not a plumber, etc. I tend to overbuild as a crutch (compensation for lack of expertise) If 2 nails were sufficient, I'd drive 9......if plastic parts were sufficiently strong enough, I'd insist on stainless steel....anywhere a normal person might use superglue I'd reach for two-part epoxy. LOL

I know what you mean. My son & I built a dog house from scratch. It weighs about 200lbs!

Well, moving on to other projects.....
If anyone is interested, I'll sell this unit (all brand new components, including filters and 100 gpd membrane)
for $400 shipped anywhere in the US

(to also include: additional filters, additional DI resin, Float valve, Filter wrench, 10' water line)
Note that this is a drinking water AND DI water hybrid unit. There is a "T" just before the DI stage for RO-only applications.
This is also a one-off creation, built with 1/2" acrylic upper and lower deckings (milled) and 1" acrylic rod supports (drilled/tapped)
Lift handles, casters, and acrylic membrane shroud. All metal hardware is stainless steel (every screw, washer, nut, nipple, etc.)
I haven't added everything up precisely but I estimate materials alone cost around $500, not including time and labor to build.

$400 shipped
