the 2 tanks are plumbed into 1 system. They share a sump, chiller, reactor and refugium.

This photo is early morning and the lights on the biggeer tank had not come up yet.

Small tank on shelf was temporary. The books are back now.

You can see the octopuss controller on the lower shelf where one of my sons has pulled it out again.

Nice setup!

da6d2003

lights on the 40 is a sunpod setup with 150 watt 14k. It has a really cool led setup built in.

Big tank has a coralife fixture using 2x 150w (experimenting with 14k bulbs) also has 2x 96w 50/50 pcs and 2x 65w actinics. This is all setup for the dawn and dusk simulation. Also running led night lighting.

New pics please:D Also FTS of each.

Those who have seen it lately will attest to the fact that they're a disorganized mess. I'm recovering from a mini crash that I caused myself inadvertantly "snorkeling" a 6 year old sandbed with a pvc frag shelf brace. DOH!!!!!! Things are starting to come back other stuff might not ever come back. :(

90 is getting ready for a long overdue lighting upgrade.

40 is what I've been looking for rock for. It's just full of frag racks right now. It's become the holding tank for the 90 and pentagon. Very ugly.

Pentagon is now back to a coral tank and awaiting its lighting upgrade too.

Excuses, excuses......

I'll post pics when things look a bit more presentable.

Can I ask what you did to your sand bed to cause a crash? This is my first tank, and I didn't know i could do anything with the sand and potentially cause a crash....please let me learn from your mistakes :D

the longer a sand bed sits it creates nitrogen pockets i believe and they become toxic. if stired up it can cause some serious problems. i lost half the livestock in one of my tanks from a move that involved stirring the sand

David, still haven't seen any good FTS's! The acanthastrea maxima actually resembles a small scolymia, although not as vibrant. Do you mind stating the actual cost for that piece? Also, I recognize some of the pieces (i.e., monipora setosa, candystripe echinophyllia) from Vivid and/or Atlantis Aquariums. Did you obtain any of your corals from either of those online sources? Finally, you have nice, seasoned reef tanks. Very Cool!

No FTS because honestly the tank just looks like a mess. I've been meaning to take some for awhile now though.

The Maxima came from Christopher at thecultivatedreef.com. It's designation is JPAL29. His list price and waitinglist price is $800 per polyp. Your observations are correct though, it does look very much like a scoly. Coloration in the pic is due to mostly actinic lighting. Most folks look at it and just say "heh, it's ok." I just like it.

Many if not most of the pieces are from sources like you mentioned but usually through trades and farming.

Seasoned? I think I'd have to say "over seasoned". This tank is getting kinda old.

Thanks for the comps.

Your maxima prompted me to look online at other colonies, and if your piece turns out anything like those, people will probably be saying something besides "it's ok." Another reef buddy has had a similar size colony of what you describe as toxic cyphastrea for 3 or 4 years. We racked our brains and could never figure out what it was. Your description must be correct; Upon closer inspection it does look like cyphastrea. I guess we never thought of that species because the toxic green morph is so dissimilar to the standard "blood red eye" type (that he also has in his tank). It was cool to finally figure it out. As far as your FTS's, are you going to rearrange the rockwork to better accomodate all those nice frags and colonies, or what?

I had SoCal construct the stand for my 150 (red oak solid and plywood doors & panels over a powder-coated steel frame). They did a nice job. They mentioned they might be changing careers, though. A loss to the hobby, for sure. When you say you were going to have them build your new tank, you must have meant acrylic-because I believe that's all they worked with for tanks. I've got to say that I'm am WAY happy with Starfire glass over acrylic-Way less hastle with coraline! I set this stony coral tank up June 14, 2007, and will post progress pics soon, fyi.

I really don't want to do glass in this house. It was built in the 20's and is all raised hardwood floors. This house flexes quite a bit.

Also, if you do get a scratch in the glass, there is didly squat you can do about it.

That's alot of positive! I remember when you picked up the maxima...its grown and looks like it's about to split.

I've been hoping it would split but I can't find more than one mouth anywhere.

I was just looking back at October on your thread, checking out the maxima when you first purchased it. Now I believe it IS definitely on it's way to a split.
