I just finishing putting GREAT STUFF Insulating Foam Sealant onto a piece of acrylic to use as a wall for my tank. At first I thought it wasn't going to work, but it was easy, and I think it turned out pretty good. I think.. we'll see.

what color does it come out to be?

There's black and there's yellow. The black pond foam is a bit more expensive than the yellow, but certainly worth it if you're going that route.

Is the foam on the inside or outside? Is it just insulation, or is it structural?

I was reading about that on ReefCentral a couple of months ago...I was thinkin of trying it out...
ninhsavetheday- where did you purchase it? how much?

I got mine in the pond section of HD, I think it was $12/can, and you need about one can per 4 sq ft.

inside or outside of tank?

lucubrator

Inside, on the back wall. Instead of a flat black back, it looks like a rock wall. It's also great for placing sps frags. You just poke them straight into it.

ok, thanks.

But it won't work on my room divider.

heres a picture of it. it looks more white than yellow, but i still think it would of been better to of gotten the black one. oh well. once i mount the corals you'll probably won't even see the the foam anyways.

I've used the black stuff on a friend's take. It looks pretty cool. I can only imagine how it look snow with corraline and corals all over it.

supaboy1981

ninhsavestheday

It sticks to both acrylic and to glass. Coralline has been growing pretty well on the areas exposed to light, but not so much on the underside. I'll see if that changes once I get the Ca reactor in place.
danny - there's a guy on RC who covered the back of his 375 with the stuff. He also says that he has good coralline growth.

Thanks Nick! I can't believe no one suggested this when I was looking at covering the back of my tank w/ fake rocks! Which HD did you purchase the black stuff from?

can you apply it when there's already water in the tank?

nope the chemical prior to the curing is bad for your tank.

Yes, it sticks to glass (the tank we used it on was glass)

As for corraline, it takes a few months. If you wantt o speed up the process, throw some chips of PVC in there. Plastic (for some reason or another) attracts the corraline algae.

I've only seen the black stuff sold online. I don't think it is made by the same company that makes 'Great Stuff'.

I just used it and it doesnt look as good as I had hoped it would and you cant mold it at all. It does come off rock easily if you mess up just let it dry for a few minutes. You can sand it and cut it down when its dry too it says. I am gonna be doing quite a bit of that

I found it at the Balboa HD, but I assume that all of them should carry it in the outside area. I managed to sort of mold mine using a rock, and varying the thickeness of the bead that it put out.
If you're really unable to find it at HD, I saw it in the back area near the frag tanks at AW on a shelf slightly above head height. I think it was $13-15 there.
