Don't do it :-(.

One grain of sand and a few swipes later....brand new tank scratched to hell.

oh, yeah.. you have to be careful of the sand. I've scratched my tank plenty of times. Fortunately, the scratch kits I've used work VERY well.

How do the scratch kits work? Do I need to drain the tank?

nope. no need to drain. Rainbow lifeguard makes one. Pretty much, it's a series of sandpapers and get finer and finer until it polishes out almost completley (You'd need to drain the tank to apply the 'super fine polish', but with the lowest grade you can go underwater, it pretty much is gone.

these scratch kits will do well on the outside of the tank I presume?
