Hey guys http://www.socalireefs.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.png I am online searching used cars. It's my 15 yr olds first car ( obvi lol) am looking to stay at or under 10k.. anybody have any good leads /dealers etc I should look into. My eyes are bleeding going through AT and Cars.com , am not into a salvage title , and most seem to be.. but only AFTER wasting time looking into the ad. He's liking the mazda 3 and scion tc.. and similar sport hatchbacks.. oh ya, and mustangs and challengers http://www.socalireefs.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.png of course! lol
Thanks for any input in advance http://www.socalireefs.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.png

Get him a Subaru wrx. They are nice and "sporty" and all wheel drive so it will be much safer and easier to drive. You can get a 2005 for like $8k

Call Mission Valley Honda and ask for John Le. Tell him Michael WeakSauce sent you and he will give you a deal. They got a lot of used cars. Also great lease offers on new cars.

For a 'used' dealer, we bought our Jetta TDI from Mirage Auto Sales on Miramar. Had never bought anything from one of those types of places, but our experience was pretty good. We got a good deal on the car and are very happy with it. The owner really cares about his business and making his customers happy and is very honest. He does have good reviews on Yelp as well.

+1 on the Subaru also checkout BMW 3 series. Bet he'd love that😁 Always bought from Drew Ford in La Mesa but might be too far for you. Always had a good experience with them.

For his first car you def don't want a sport car. High insurance high cost of maintenance (and there will always be maintenance) and they do not hold good value. plus do you really want your inexperienced driver to be whippin around town pretending he's in fast and furious? IMO an IME (I work for an automotive forensics and expert witness company) you want to stick with the common cars that are easy to maintain cheap to maintain good on gas are reliable and hold there value as well as being safe ie. Corollas and Hondas.
You should also stay away from getting a car with low pro rims, you will go through tires multiple times a year an they are not cheap at $150-200 per tire. He may not like it now but his pockets will very soon especially with gas prices soaring and the inevitability of used cars needing some work

Lol I just know they're good cars. Had an 06' 325 and 10' 535 so I might be a bit biased haha you can def find the 3's under 10k tho. C'mon Mom!😉

You know what? Now that I think about it, I just remembered member Jada1(Danny) works at a BMW dealer. He bought his boy one and I know he was happy with that. I think it kind a messed with his reefing budget though lol maybe get in touch with him... A nice 325i would be perfect IMO It's a nice-looking and safe vehicle and they look fast but they are definitely not! But hey, don't listen to me like I said I am very biased haha

Jhuneke

Thanks! I feel u, I love my 335i more than is probably normal lol they are great machines.. But buying used I cringe about the maint and repair bills. Wanna get him something that won't require so much cost of ownership ya know?

Yes and I definitely feel you on that. I can say from experience that BMWs that no longer have the warranty are quite expensive to maintain.

I'll suggest another vehicle then... We actually just got a 2005 Toyota Corolla for 6k and it's been great. Excellent gas mileage, low cost of ownership, and it's very safe. Also looks pretty nice and even better if you get the "S". I looked up the reviews on it and it's one of the top rated vehicles with a 9.5 out of 10. Anyway, sorry for blowing up your thread lol good luck with whatever you guys end up getting. Keep us posted as I'm sure it will make for some great forum convos because we all have opinions of what the best vehicle is for your son haha

And a wrx is a sedan and not a coupe so it's not nearly expensive for insurance and it will be the safest car for him. All wheel drive for the win!

$10K for a first car? Lucky Kid!

How about an early 80's Mercedes diesel? 67HP and they run forever. That's what my dad bought me in High School.

Sold!! Lol getting some decent leads here guys, thank you! Am checking into a mazda3 '08 , and a good lead on a scion '11 too.. Although the '11 is a salvage due to theft, ( no accident) says he bought back from ins co and replaced seats , steering wheel etc after it got stripped. Only 7.8k w 37k miles .. Sounds too good to be true. Wonder if I can find out if he's BS ing about the damage? Carfax maybe, other than that idk..

I'd recommend my subaru to anyone over any car, and has one of the best resale value / price retention. Impreza or foresters are nice. I drive a wrx and love it. Plus he can get into a car club / group like San Diego subies, keeps him out of trouble too.

I'd get the kid a straight forward toyota pick up truck for first car, cheap, dependable, and most of all he can only drive himself and a passenger, which to me is so much safer than hauling a load of distracting passengers of his age.
Besides that, I would make him use that truck to haul your water from scripps!lol

Get him one of these. It comes in handy for new tanks and for Scripps water... ;) 275 gallon of water is a breeze....

Ah no worries man, I could care less.
I just remember being in school way long ago, and it seemed like the kids in small little two seater trucks had less distractions/trouble than the ones hauling a lot of people or in fast hot roddy cars, you know how it goes at that age in first car.

Do you know what it'll cost to insure a 15 year old driving a WRX or an S2000? According to Top Gear the best car for a 16 year old boy is a beige Volvo Estate with a broken back window!

80s or 90s Jeep Cherokee. Tough, well built cars. Pretty inexpensive and room for stuff in the back. I was hit twice in one when I was a kid and there was no damage to me or the Jeep. My sister rolled one when she feel asleep at the wheel. She was fine and after my dad rolled the car back over he drove it home.

I am a subaru diehard, but i would not recommend it for a 15 year old boy!!!! I have had 5 subarus including the sti and the 2015 wrx i now drive. Two reasons now to purchase a Subie for your son, 1.insurance on a turbo charged sports car for a 15 year old BOY you might as well put all your corals up for grabs now to finance your policy :), 2.TURBOCHARGER+15 YEAR OLD TESTOSTERONE DRIVEN YOUNG MAN=NO BUENO! Unless you get him a subaru legacy or forrester then belay my last, they are as safe can automobiles can get!

Check if there's any modification in the engine first tell would be an air filter intake mod that means the owner been racing this car around make sure no mods to suspension u don't want headaches and make sure its smog..check for vin decals on door jamb and hood and vin on some part of car thats how you can tell if its been wrecked when they're missing..and have your mechanic check it first before you buy..

Ya.. It's ridiculous! Not too far off every other model surprisingly. It's just the boy, such discrimination :/ ins to the teeth is like $160 ! I'll prob go liab/ coll/ comp w a 2k deductible for under 120.. Could do liability for only 68.. But who wants to tempt fate THAT much!!

Great choice for a reliable car. Those do get pulled over a LOT as they 'look like they are going fast'. My wife's old boss had one and she always drove the speed limit and had to fight at least 2 speeding tickets.

Tell your boy to stay safe and drive the speed limit or he may wind up with some hefty tickets.
