I read about this article earlier today, had some thoughts and wanted to share. If this bill is passed it could open a whole new book about conservation, what is and not allowed in captivity.:confused2::crazy::curse::hidee yes:

I saw this story on the news last night and it infuriated me. What have we come to when we are legislating based on sensationalized propaganda that is full of half-truths and outright deceptive lying? Blackfish is a completely biased twist on reality put forth by people with an extremist agenda. Between that "movie" and PETA, the Assemblyman that is authoring this bill is just buying into the pressure. The local "conservationist" that is pushing this bill feels that any animal that is in captivity and "performs" is being abused and is a victim of animal cruelty. I wonder if she has a dog and ever asks it to roll over or catch a Frisbee? Is that really any different?

Are Orcas meant to be in a tank and trained to "perform" for crowds of people? No
Are they abused and "sad" because they can't be out in the ocean swimming for thousands of miles looking for food? No Or more accurately, how would we know?

If Sea World can not have Shamu shows, then I would fully expect them to shut down. If that happens, then say goodbye to the hundreds of millions of dollars that they spend doing research and animal conservation around the world. If they have no income stream, then they have no research money. Isn't the "sacrifice" of 20 or so Orcas being used to generate revenue worth it to the overall picture? As long as these animals are not being truly physically abused how can you say that they are not happy? They aren't yanked out of the ocean anymore and they would not be breeding in captivity if they were unhappy or abused. Blackfish focused almost exclusively on one Orca that obviously had issues. Sea World has had these animals for decades without incident.

How long will it be before a law like this one proposed gets extended to include everything in your tank at home? Don't think that's next? I wouldn't count on it. That is exactly what these nut-jobs are trying to do, all the way down to your dog and cat.

Well said, Dave.

Ah yes, the Hollywood documentary film. I'm not a big fan of movies that are made with the intent of changing the minds of viewers to agree with the film maker's morals or social opinions. Sure, some may have their merits and movies are cultural artifacts that can offer a window into our temporal culture. But to tell a story and keep the viewer's interest, they have to combine a mixture of artistic flare, entertainment to keep the viewer interested, and business interests to provide the insights into our ever-changing social values, worries, hopes and dreams. While their first goal is to serve as entertainment, more and more they tend to give the apearance as reflecting the commonly viewed spiritual values and morals of our culture. Who knows how much unbiased scientific research goes into the making of any documentary film. Maybe the filmmakers see themselves as creative artists for whom ethical behavior is at the core of their projects. Documentary films may lack the objectivity common (hopefully) in legitimate scientific research. Although Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth was full of technical inaccuracies, there is strong evidence that our planet is currently going through a warming period. Another subject entirely but "ice ages" come and go throughout geologic time. Ever wonder what created the Great Lakes, Great Salt Lake, Yosemite Valley, etc.?
If you want to see a solid scientific film, check out "Reefer Madness" sometime. Or even better, you need not look any further than "Spinal Tap" - as a guitar player, my personal favorite.
Just my unsolicited opinion.
