That's awesome you could even take it a step farther and paint it black with Krylon fusion. Did you run any test before/after?

I thought about paint it blk ...but just couldn't get my hand on aquarium safe paint....I know that it does draw water in from the sides but how much ... That I don't know ....but it does help a lot with moving water in the tank

I know that the plastic they use to make bottles can degrade over time. They don't recommend reusing them to drink from. I wonder if there are any concerns with using that type of plastic in aquariums for long term use.

You are right jeff....but that's regarding people leaving water bottles in the car or in the heat.... The sun melts the bottle and release plastic chemical into the water .... but aquarium water not hot enough to melt and degrade the bottle..

The sun melts the bottle and release plastic chemical into the water

This is a popular thing that people say but proving whether it is true is tough stuff. There's certainly some fierce debate as to whether or not you should continue to use bottles made with PETE after their intended one-time use. While the process of chemically dissolving bottles does occur, long term studies on whether or not this affects reef life in our aquariums is limited. I'll tell you that I personally used some plastic from bottles in my tank for a few months but saw no decay of the plastic in my tank, the process may take longer, perhaps years to happen in your temperate aquarium.

New research into hazards associated with disposable water bottles is ongoing.

Part of the perpetuation of the information above is tied to aspartame and how it breaks down into a harmful substance if heated. IE. Left in your car.

3Reef has a fantastic article discussing the safety and potential pitfalls of the type of plastics that you'll find in your fridge.

And here's another citing similar research.

Long story short, you're treading in waters that many have waded before. Those people involved eventually broke down tanks or replaced hardware long before any damage was done to their systems. Keep a lookout, here there be dragons.
