So did anyone guess by the title what I'm doing this fine Wednesday evening? Yup, I'm trying to catch a couple Damsels...ugh I so despise these fish! But what really prompted me to build these DIY fish traps tonight was my stupid Maroon Clown. He's always(or she I should say now) kinda punked my two Ocelarris Clowns a bit, but after last nights aquascape remodel, the Maroon Clown has terrorized my little Nemos(yes I said Nemos) to the point that they are hiding behind the rocks and not eating. So now I'm on a mission! I'm seriously having anxiety over these stupid fish right now lol I've already tried fishing, didn't work, so now I'm trying this. Only thing I've caught so far tho is a hermit crab haha If this doesn't work I have no clue what I'm going to do. Drain the whole damn tank if I have to! I've heard a lot of success stories with the DIY soda bottle method so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I'll take them just catch them :)
They are by far the hardest fish to net

I used a soda bottle to catch mine, I kept the opening smaller though. Once yours goes in you may want to put a net over the end of the bottle to keep it in. Also, it may help to not feed the tank for a day or two then bait the trap with their favorite food.

Omg why would you want them!!? Lol well the Maroons are pretty cool they're just super aggressive to my other pair. I forgot to mention I have another Maroon paired with the bigger one. If, no when, I catch these a-holes I'll let you know

Ya I don't think I'll catch them today. Was thinking exactly that, not feed the tank for a couple days then try again. After I posted the first post I caught my yellow tang tho lol and my 8" Desjardini is on a mission of his own right now to fit through a 1"hole!

I have several damsels their cool reef fish to have, it's just you have to commit
I have large chromis also people always go wow are those chromis!
I guess they always either sell them or kill them off before they get big

To be honest, they used to be one of my favorite fish in the tank. Just seems that once they grew bigger they started trying to push everyone else around. I think if I had like a 300 something gallon tank I'd be cool with all of these fish. Good thing I'm planning just that in the near future:)

I caught 6 damsels using a big fish trap and setting it on the side of the tank about half way down. Using mysis surely help my case. But then my brother thought the one in the mysteriously got to the sump on accident and put him back in the tank. SCHMUCK!!! Now with that said havent been able to get him since. He knows i am after his punk ass.

Haha! That's the worst when they know you're after them! It even seems like they taunt you on purpose sometimes! Good luck catching him:)

easiest thing to do is just pull the rock then net them. the bottle trick didnt work with me, just caught my shrimp. ive spent hours chasing them back and forth around my tank with a net

Ya I thought about that tonight too. I really should just pull it all out while the tank is still pretty new and not much has grown onto the rocks. I just redid the left side of my tank yesterday tho and it took me soooo long lol I guess I could plan a day to get it done. I don't have the time to be setting traps and waiting for all of these guys to be caught. We'll see...

Shock methods that I've read on the interweb that made me giggle.
1) Wait until 3am when the tank has been dark and asleep for a while, flip the lights on full blast and fish them while they're stunned for 30 seconds.
2) Turn the heater off and let the temp drop so that they're slow and sluggish.

I saw the first one but not the second. The thing about the first one tho is that the damsels hide deep in the rocks at night and they wouldn't come out. I dunno about making the tank too cold either. That just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I couldn't cool it down that much even if I wanted to tho. I've never had a heater on my tank. Right now it's at like 80°-81° and the temp in my house is 68°.
