Ok guy here's my first SW tank. Don't have the

Tell me what you think. And hope all goes well in
the future.

doesn't look like regular LR. there's a lot of large flat pieces. what you got in there? it would make some nice ledges once you get a lil more rock goin. we understand you're just gettin it started.

Nope, one of the lights burned out. Have to go buy another one.

Yup what I said.. but wifey didn't like where I put the tank, so I
had to make a compromise. :(

Nope not an elbow... Kids knee.

Not sure, got all of it from wwxc. But there where lots of flat
pieces. And I'm planning to get just a little more rock and mostly
use PVC shelving to make up the rest. Don't have lots of money
to get LR. Unless someone else is selling some here on the forum.

Oh and TOM... Hell no... Not going to get that fish in my tank.
(inside joke)

Well water finally cleared up and tank looks much better now.
Just have to wait a couple of days and see how the water cycle is.
Should be quicker for the water to cycle since most of the stuff
was cured.

Will keep everyone posted with my progress.

After lookin at the pic again I dont really see any filtration. What do you have? All I can see is what looks like an HOB skimmer.

Well here are some updated pictures. I've added SD619's LR.
And now I have a hood. And since the hood I went ahead and
got some T5 lights, 2 sun pro and 2 blue plus's. But like a bone
head, got to excited and broke one of the sun pro's. Added some
hermits and snails to help take care of the algae thats growing
so far. Here are some pictures: Tank with canopy.

Nope its just a Rio90. Whats helping more with circulation is the
spray bar. When I start to get fish in the tank. I'll move the Rio to
the back of the tank.

well before it was even worse than it is now. Mostly it has been
the emerald crabs that have been pecking at it. They just aren't
fast enough. And algae grows back. So if anyone else has a better
way of getting rid of hair algae lets us know.

I do remember looking at your thread now. It looks great, and I hope the refugium goes good. Please post pics on your ongoing (and usually never ending) progress on this tank. It looks excellent, and has lots of room for expansion.

Oh, I completly forgot to ask you while you were here if you needed any macro algae. My algae is going out of control, and I'm going to be cutting it back pretty soon.

yup will defintely need some. When ever you are free, just PM
and I'll come by. Now I just need some clip on lighting to help
the algae grow.

very nice looking tank. keep on top of the hair algae it can get out of control very fast. emerals, turbo snails, and a few select fish can help, but when it comes down to it you just have to bite the bullet and get in there and pull it out. onw method i tried was to connect a tooth brush to the end of a hose and start a spypon, i ran the hose down into a micron bag in the sump. this way you can scrub as long as you want without loseing water. it worked pretty well and was much easier than just pulling it out with my hands. good luck hopefully with the addition of the fuge and oncw the tank matures a little more it will get starved out. keep us updated with pics.....lol
cheers on the progress so far and good luck..
happy reefing

Great suggestion with the siphon to the micron bag. I have been doing more water changes than I would like because I did not think of that!

I dont have a sock, or even sump for that matter... I dont mind losing some water and adding more. Need to do a water change here and there anyways. Ive used a toothbrush before on rocks, but never like this. Great idea! Thanks!

it took me a few sessions to master the technique, but all in all it works fairly well. if you dont have a micron bag, i have used those filter media bags the ones you put carbon and what not in. they work pretty much the same

More updated pictures. I couldn't get a good shot of the fuge
conversion I did in the back sump. Will try again and post them
later.

It's a red carnation

Hey Cruzer how long have you had that carnation? I thought they don't like a lot of light... Well I had one but it was pretty hard to take care of... it died after 4 weeks... Any advices b/c I might be interested in getting another one

MarLooney
09-04-2004, 12:14 PM
advice, don't get another one. i kept one for aobut half a year, but IMO that's still not long enough. they just don't do well long term. if you really wanna keep one you should have a tank specifically geared towards non-photosynthetics... and even then you're only raising your chances it'll stay alive.
